Choose the Right Dog Crate for Your Puppy

Are you looking for a dog crate for your new puppy? Are you uncertain which one will be the right one? There are so many different crates available, it can be hard to to know which one to spend your money on. Here are some guidelines on how to choose the right dog crate for your puppy.

How Big Does it Need to Be?

This is probably the most important question you will be asking yourself when you are trying to choose the right dog crate for your puppy. The right size will mostly depend on what you intend to use the dog crate for. Will you be using it for potty training, to keep your puppy in at night, to take with you on trips, etc? For example, if you are potty training, the crate should be just big enough for your puppy to turn around and lay down comfortably, creating a “den” for them. Your puppy will avoid using his “den” as a potty, so having a smaller area will help. If you get a large dog crate, they will be able to choose a corner to do their business in. The smaller the area, the easier the potty training will be. If you intend to keep your puppy in the crate at night after they are potty trained, you should consider getting a crate that has a movable “barrier” or divider. You can move the divider as your puppy grows or remove it completely when they are potty trained to give them more room.

Consider how large your puppy will be when it is full grown. You do not want to have to keep buying bigger dog crates because they keep outgrowing them. Look at the recommended dog breeds for the crate you are considering buying to see if it would be able to hold your puppy when they reach their full size. There needs to be enough room for them to stand, sit and lay down comfortably. Follow the product recommendations to help you choose the right dog crate for your puppy.

Pick the Right Material

If you are going to be spending money on a dog crate, you want to make sure you consider what it is made from. Puppies can be very destructive, so if you are intending to leave yours alone for a period of time in their dog crate, it needs to be durable. Your puppy will probably chew on it, push on the sides and door, try to climb out, etc. I have found that wire dog crates work great with my dogs. They are pretty durable, even if your puppy decides to try to escape. Plastic crates are lightweight and can be inexpensive, but your puppy might chew holes in it. Canvas or cloth crates are good if you need something portable, but may not work well for a long period of time or for leaving your puppy unsupervised.

If you are trying to figure out how to choose the right dog crate for your puppy, make sure you consider how big your dog will be when they are an adult. Using a dog crate that has a movable divider is a good solution. Also make sure you buy a dog crate made of the right material. Do some research on the different types of dog crates available for your puppy before you make the investment. Learn more about the durability of the products you are considering for your pet before you buy them to save yourself time and money!
