Clifford\'s Eulogy

Clifford and Gretta

In the beginning there was just Gretta and me. We felt the need for another companion and brought Clifford into our lives. He was a very curious, active and loving addition to our little family. Gretta took to Clifford as a young sibling might to an older brother or sister, following his every move and not moving until he would lead. When it was time for supper, Gretta would even defer to him as he could be a little pushy. When it was time to nap, she would cuddle against him with her head on his back as two souls united in sleep.

In the beginning, we opened our arms and our hearts to Clifford and he returned to us the joy and affection and attention of a true and loyal friend. He added to the essence of our being, enhancing our lives as only a kindred spirit could.

Clifford is no more. Gretta is lost in grief. I am heart-broken that he is gone and that I could not preserve that special being for the both of us. The universe gave him to us for a brief time, and he has now returned there, perhaps to enrich the lives of others as he has ours.

Authors Note: Clifford and Gretta are both King Charles dogs owned by a very dear friend of mine. I had many occasions to dog-sit them as well as visit quite often and consequently became as attached to them as I was to my friend. They were a very interesting pair with contrasting personalities as the story presents. For example, a walk with Clifford required that he be on a leash at all times as he could just take off after a squirrel or rabbit while Gretta never strayed more than 3 feet from us, no leash ever required. Clifford developed a fairly common ailment to the King Charles' breed which essentially causes the brain to outgrow the skull, resulting in uncontrollable scratching and eventual paralysis. After extensive medical care failed to alleviate his condition, he had to be put down. She held him in her lap as he took his last breath in comfort and peace. I don't know how she could bear it, I couldn't be there. When we met afterwards, we embraced and cried. We had lost a loved one. I wrote this eulogy for her benefit and in loving memory of a lost companion. It now sits in a frame on her mantle as a daily reminder of what was lost and what was loved.

Hi Debbie, thanks for your comment. My mother often said of our own dog growing up that our Queenie only needed a voice to be just like a person. I never forgot that [removed]in Italian of course). Their loyalty and unconditional love can certainly endear them to us above many of our human friends. It's such a shame that they don't have longer lifespans to match our own. Happy Holidays!
