Collars Vs Harnesses

I’m here to finally answer the question that is burning in every dog owners mind. (whether they know it or not) The age old question that has confounded dog owners since our forefathers domesticated the wild wolf. (I’d have bought a ticket to that one by the way) the question that every dog owner has to answer to himself virtually every time he takes old Barkley the dog out for a walk.

What is the age old question question you ask? What is it that has dog owners scrathing thier heads with worry and consternation?

The question is: Should I use a collar or a harness?!

Yes that's right. Should I use a collar or a harness? You may think that this is a trival thing. You may think that it really doesn't matter whether you use a collar or a harness for your dog. Well! You would be wrong my friend. This is a very important question to answer. If not answered properly, all kinds of mayhem and mischief could possibly ensue.

Just imagine for a moment that you and your little Bichon Frise Trixy, (who is wearing her collar) are strolling down the street, when all of a sudden around the corner comes Joseph T. Machodude and his 120 lb Rottweiler. Trixy is in jeopardy of becoming lunch for the monster dog! You need to grab her quick. But you need to real her in with the leash first. Poor Trixy ends up twisting at the end of her leash like a 10 pound Salmon you’re trying to get into the boat! This is not good.

If Trixy had a harness on. Especially one with a convenient handle built into the top. You could have reached down and grabbed her in a flash and the crisis could have been averted.

On the other hand Joe Machodude would really do well to have Killer the Rottweiler wearing his choke collar. This way he has much more control over his aggressive, muscular monster dog. If he had Killer in a harness, chances are he gets dragged half way to the next stop light before he regains control and poor Trixy ……..Well, let’s not even think about it!

So really it depends on the size and strength of your dog and the potential situation you may find yourself in with the dog. Next time you go to grab that leash to take your best furry buddy for a walk. Stop and think a minute about the age old question. Collar or harness? The right choice could save a lot of grief in the long run.
