Common Dog Health Problems - What You Need To Know

Arthritis is one of our canine friends most common dog health problems, with one in five dogs suffering in silence. Unfortunately, they can't tell us what hurts. As loving pet owners why are so many of us missing the mark when it cones to identifying our dog sick symptoms? Imagine not being able to communicate your pain! Many of our pets are living with and displaying dog arthritis symptoms.

It is easy to assume that our pet is getting older and doesn't want to move as much. Maybe we just think they're lazy. The fact is, many common dog health problems are overlooked because of this type of thinking. It's not because we don't love our pets. Many times it is simply a matter of our pet's health changing gradually over time. When you see someone every day, pets included it can be easy to miss the onset of dog arthritis symptoms.

Many dogs, especially larger breeds have sever problems with their hips. Arthritis usually affects elbows and shoulders in the front, knees and hips in the hind end. Some things to look for are:

Dog Arthritis Symptoms

  • Refuses or hesitates to climb stairs/jump up
  • Mood changes
  • No interest in playing
  • Weight gain
  • Sore/stiff joints
  • Favors limb
  • Difficulty sitting/standing
  • Less alert

Your pet may also need X-rays but any one of these signs could indicate that your pet needs help. The best thing you can do for them is to get a early diagnosis and treatment. This will slow the progression of arthritis in your pet. Some common treatments are:

  • Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs/ NASAIDS
  • Steroids
  • Glucosamine
  • Chondrotin
  • Omega Fatty Acids
  • Buffered Vitamin C for over all tissue health

Some home remedies which people use are; apple cider vinegar, (1 tsp.) in water dish daily. Black strap molasses (1/4 tsp.) per day mixed with food. The use of a heating pad may also be beneficial for pain relief but would require constant monitoring. You must also use caution in case of burn or injury.

Foods to avoid are: tomatoes, potatoes, peppers and eggplant. These foods tend to aggravate arthritis.

If you are having trouble getting your pet to take their medication here is a recipe for homemade pill pockets which also have ingredients that help with arthritis.

  • 4 tbls. peanutbutter
  • 4 tbls. black strap molasses
  • pinch of turmeric powder

Simply mix all ingredients together in a bowl, cover and keep refrigerated. Only use enough of this mixture to wrap medication dose. Remember, never give your pet medication which are meant for people.

With a bit of knowledge it will be easy to identify common dog health problems and help your pet with their dog arthritis symptoms.
