Communicating With Your German Shepherd

Most people who own a German Shepherd know they are a very loyal breed. They love, trust and want to protect their families. I believe a Shepherd would give their life for the ones they love. German Shepherd's are also known as one of the best working breeds in the world. They are highly intelligent and have such a keen sense of smell that they can sniff out drugs and intruders, find the lost, or alert technicians of a gas leak buried 15 feet underground. Some of these jobs are dangerous.

If a Shepherd and his human partner do not have good communication skills they will not be able to effectively do the job they set out to do and possibly get hurt or worse. It's just like two human partners who set out to do a task. If they are not good communicators then it will make it more difficult to complete the task at hand, both partners need to be on the same “wave length”. GSD's communicate with their human companions in many different ways.

Just think, when you met your dog for the first time, you were new to one another and both “spoke” different “languages”. Even with your dog, communication is the key to developing a strong, healthy relationship! So what do you do to build a trusting relationship? You learn each others language (so to speak)!

As you know, humans and dogs express themselves differently, but once you know how your dog expresses himself communicating becomes much easier and less frustrating. The key is knowing what to look for in your dog.

Learning the very basics of dog body language will help us to better communicate with our canine companion. We can look for the yawn, the shake of the body, the push with the nose, the lick of the lip, the downward stretch and the flick of his ear. These are just a few of the cues dogs use to communicate with us. If we open ourselves to learning the language they use to communicate it will help to reduce the anxiety in their lives and ours too!

Our German Shepherd's name is Jake. I often wonder what Jake thinks throughout the day as he is spending time with us. Because of his body language, I can tell he is thankful and loves us for taking him home and making him part of our family.

He licks our faces, nuzzles his nose in our hands and although he is a little bit big for it, he tries to crawl in our laps. He wags his tail and looks at us with those playful puppy dog eyes. He is telling us he is happy.

A few other instances that come to mind is Jake will sit on the back of his “human brother” Zeke while he is laying on the floor! Zeke just pets him and goes on with what he is doing. Jake will lay on the floor and lay on his back showing his belly and wanting to be rubbed. At night he'll put his feet on mom and dad's bed to make sure they are still there. We don't shove him away, but instead we pet and hug him. Through our body language he knows we love him too! It's all in the way you communicate with one another!
