Cruelty to Animals (dogs), Part II

Cruelty to dogs can be in the form of overcrowded, unsanitary conditions which lead to disease and even death. But it can manifest itself in far more appalling forms. We will look at some of these.

Dogs are social animals. They will live in packs if left to their own devices in the wild. They like the company of other animals or people. After all, we call them “man’s best friend”. Dogs can be a wonderful addition to our households. They can bring fun and laughter into our day to day lives. We need to interact with them to be able to appreciate them and to bring out their full potential. Most people that have a dog do interact with them in this way.

But there are those people who will buy or adopt a dog and then leave him or her tied outside of the house in the yard. Sometime these shackles are simply a rope; sometime chains are used. Leaving an animal restrained for a short period of time may sometime be necessary. But to leave a dog tied or chained indefinitely is cruel. As we have stated above, dogs like our company. They will not understand why they are left alone and restrained. Sometimes they are restrained in the sun and without water. This is really cruel.

Some people get dogs to use in dog fights. They seem to get some sort of enjoyment from pitting two healthy dogs against each other. But dog fighting is a horrible thing for any dog to have to endure. To “train” a dog for fighting, many people will secure a dog with a very heavy chain. Others use weighted vests on their dogs. This is an attempt to build muscle in the dog. Most people that do this, start when the dog is too young; no muscle building should be done until a dog is at least 18 months of age. Oftentimes a younger or weaker dog is pitted against the “fighter” just to give it a taste for blood. Don’t get me wrong; just because I know these facts does not mean I am in any way advocating this behavior. I detest dog fighting.

As I have already pointed out, dogs are social animals. They actually don’t want to fight each other. In the pack there is always an alpha or “top” dog. All others are at some other place in the hierarchy. They have a great amount of respect for each other. They will fight among themselves if it is necessary, but most problems are solved without violence. To make dogs fight is horrible. As far as I am concerned it is one of the cruelest ways to treat a dog.

Street Talk

Great article, I agree that dogs are social beings and I have no toleration for someone who wants to make them fight. Thank you
