What are dog appeasing pheromones and how can they help in treating your anxious dog? Dog appeasing pheromones are said to be the natural-occurring chemical that female dogs emit around their newborn puppies. They help give the puppies a sense of reassurance and security, creating a calming effect on them during stressful situations. Dog appeasing pheromones even have a calming effect on adult dogs, taking them back to that feeling of safety they had with their mother dog.

Dog appeasing pheromone (D.A.P.) therapy has been proven to be effective in treating dogs of all ages who suffer from stressful situations and phobias and reducing or even eliminating their fears and behavioral manifestation of such fears. Such fears that D.A.P. is known to have a positive effect on include noise phobias (thunderstorms, fireworks), separation anxiety, travel anxiety, visits to the veterinarian, new people in their environment, or a change in their environment such as moving to a new home. These anxieties can result in the dog chewing and/or otherwise destroying your furniture or other possessions; excessively barking, whining, or whimpering, especially when the dog is left home alone; excessively licking; or soiling in the house by an otherwise housebroken dog. Puppies, adult dogs, and even the senior dogs have all shown significant reduction in these behaviors and show an overall sense of calmness and wellbeing when exposed to the dog appeasing pheromones.

The most widely used form of this therapy is that of a plug-in diffuser. This releases the pheromones continuously in a 650-square-foot area for approximately 4 weeks before having to replace the cartridge. This should be placed in the room in which the dog spends most of his time and can be moved from room to room. Other forms of this therapy include a D.A.P. collar and a spray that is often used on a bandana placed around the dog's neck or sprayed on his bedding.

Dog appeasing pheromones do not work on 100% of dogs but do have a strong track record. You may see an immediate response in your dog or it may take 2 to 4 weeks to see positive results. Each dog is different and will respond differently to this therapy. Many people have found dog appeasing pheromones to be the all-natural treatment of choice and have thus avoided medicating their anxious dog with prescriptions from the veterinarian. Dog appeasing pheromone therapy is budget friendly and worth giving a try if you have a stressed-out dog.
