Anyone owns a dog as a companion knows what a joy they can be. when we see dogs on fill, police or guide dogs working it is difficult to believe that a well-loved and cared for dog could ever be a problem, but if you ask among your family and friends you are almost certain to hear someone who has had a real difficulties or even worse, had to part with a dog because they could not cope.

This sad state of affairs can be avoided if the right things are done.

but why do things go wrong ?

mainly because we fail to guard against disaster, most dogs are perfectly well-behaved despite the approach and attitude the owners adopt, but not necessarily because of it.

In other words you can do all the wrong things and get away with it, but this is not very responsible and unfortunately if things do go wrong it is the dog who quite unjustifiably gets the blame, so we must look upon doing the "right" things as a form of insurance against problems developing instead of reacting when they occur.

This booklet is designed to help you throughout the booklet dogs and puppies are refered to as "he" this is for convenience only and all advice is equally applicable to bitches.

But what are the main problem areas that could develop if my family and i do not do the right things?

1. Fearful Behaviour:

Due to a lack of habituation/ socialization.

2. Chewing/ Inappropriate Toileting/Palau Bitting:

Problems due to inappropriate early learning.

3. Boisterousness & General lack of control.

4. Separation Anxiety:

Which can result in :

Destructive behaviour

Vocal behaviour

Loss of toilet Control

5. Aggression:

Dominance Aggression; towards family members.

territorial aggression; towards visitors.

Fear/ apprehensive aggression; towards people who unnerve the dog.

aggression between dogs in the same household.

How can we help prevent fearful behaviour?

The First few weeks of a puppy's life are crucial in the development of sound temperament. identifying a point at which this stage finishes is difficult but up to 12-14 weeks is normally accepted as the period when the most useful socialization and habituation takes place. Breeders can certainly do a lot to help start this process , but after 6 weeks of age the sooner the new owner can start this developmental process in their own environment the greater the chance of developing good temperament and preventing fearful behaviour.

Finally, Pet's are a big part of our lives and we do Care about them too much.
