Dog Cancer Treatment

Considering cancer is the number one killer of our dogs who are ten years and older, dog cancer treatment is very important. Common types of this devastating disease are; lymphoma, skin, breast and bone cancer. As pet owners we should know the common symptoms of cancer in dogs. Knowing the symptoms will greatly increase our chances of getting the best dog cancer treatment for our beloved pets. Keep in mind your pet may not display any symptoms at all besides not feeling well. Following are some common symptoms of cancer in dogs;

Symptoms of Cancer in Dogs

  • Increase appetite but loss of weight.
  • Localized swelling or lameness.
  • Trouble breathing
  • Weakness
  • Open areas that do not heal.
  • A lump that does not go away or increases in size.
  • Unexplained or abnormal bleeding.
  • Enlarged lymph nodes.

Now that we know some of the symptoms it is only normal to wonder if your pet may be at risk for cancer. Don't worry, there can be a variety of reasons for the above symptoms. However, if your pet has these warning signs it is important to have them evaluated by your veterinarian. A word of warning, if your pet is either a golden retriever or a boxer you should know that these breeds have a higher incidence of cancer than others. So, if this breed is displaying any of these symptoms, I would strongly advise a trip to the vet, just to be on the safe side.Now that I've got you thinking about this dreaded disease, you're probably wondering what causes cancer in dogs.

Obviously, we have figured out that cancer occurs more often in certain breeds as I just mentioned. We also know that it is an older dogs disease, generally contracted after ten years of age. Mixed breeds are less apt to get cancer than a pure breed. As with most diseases, there are the common contributing factors like smog, herbicides, insecticides as well as food preservatives and color additives. As you can see our knowledge of the causes of canine cancer is somewhat limited.This doesn't go very far in helping us with the prevention of this disease in our pets.

As I said prevention is tough because we just don't know enough about the causes. One thing we are sure of in this case, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Have your pets spayed and neutered! Did you know, besides feeding your pet a healthy, holistic diet the next most important thing you can do in the prevention of this devastating disease is to have your pets spayed or neutered? It's a fact, if a female is spayed before her first heat it reduces her chance of contracting breast cancer eight times. Imagine that eight times, I would say it is well worth the effort. Another preventative measure is good oral care and regular veterinary check ups. So what about the worse case scenario and your pet gets cancer?

I am not going to tell you not to worry, you will anyway. Don't loose hope though. There is an over all cure rate for canine cancer of about sixty percent. They always have a better chance if the disease is caught and treated early. So it is important to be on the look out for symptoms of cancer in dogs. Remember, canine cancer can be treated and there are many dog cancer treatments available. Today we have almost as many options of cancer treatments for our pets as we do ourselves. Some cancers can be completely removed through surgery, while others may require any one or a combination of radiation, chemo therapy or even bone marrow transplants. Fortunately, dog cancer treatment make it possible for us to look forward to many happy years with our pets.

Hi there, Thanks for this. We have lost four dogs in the past three plus years which has been very emotional. With one of them we had no idea why she went, one was very old so expected, one had many strokes and his quality of life was poor. The fourth one developed cancer of the liver very quickly one week and was gone in under a week. We wrote to the breeder we got him from out of courtesy really and she told us that there appears solid evidence that there is a world wide increase in cancer in dogs due to ingestion of pesticides through their paws. The real problem with this is that you often cannot see or do not know that a field has been treated this way. Don't wish to scare anyone at all but it is something worth looking into further, Regards Keith

You can have your pet treated by an orthomolecular vet. It can be expensive, but they have great success, especially with cancer.

Its amazing what we can do for man's best friend now, I and pleased that the cure stats are so good. I am curious though how dogs develop it in the first place?

The causes of canine cancer aren't really known except as I mentioned. One thing that researchers point out is, we take very good care of our pets these days so they live longer. Older dogs are more often affected by cancer. So, it seems we are seeing a higher occurrence of cancer simply because our pets are living longer lives. There is ongoing research in the area because if they are able to discover causes in dogs they feel it may also benefit humans.
