Dog: Man\'s Best Friend

Dog is the word for the day around here. We have three of man's best friends romping and playing around the house and across the range. My favorite time of day is first thing in the morning. Why? Because I can sit and have each dog come over for some 'lovin's!

What a great start to the day. It doesn't matter my mood or how sick I feel, our three best friends are always there waiting for their chance to cheer me up with their love and devotion.

Dogs have a way of knowing our moods and what we need. Sometimes I don't even realize I need the attention and shoo the dogs away, sometimes with sharp words like "GO LAY DOWN!" They obey, of course, but know that if only given the chance they could make me feel better.

If only we would listen to what our dogs are trying to tell us. They only want the best for us. I can't remember a time without having a loyal dog at my side. Life definitely would not be the same without dogs.

One of my earliest memories involved our dog, Dusty. He was a playful border collie/lab mix that had the energy to keep up with my older brother and me. Dusty could play fetch, open doors and many other cool tricks that my dad had taught him over the years.

A trick that surprised us all had to do with our neighbor's 3 year old boy. We all loved playing out on the railroad tracks that were only about 100 feet from our back doors. We would spend hours playing in the gravel and making roads for our Tonka toy trucks and loaders!

One late morning, as usual, our little neighbor friend, my older brother and I were busy moving gravel to make a mountain we called Mt. Railroad. All three of us were busy getting the mountain built, when suddenly we were interrupted with my mom's voice ringing out from the kitchen window. "Lunch is ready!", she called. She could keep a watchful eye on us from there because the kitchen window faced the backyard.

My brother and I left our little neighbor friend in charge of the heavy equipment. It was time for a break to fill our own tanks with fuel.

As my brother and I ate our sandwiches, my mom continued to be busy in the kitchen. Suddenly my mom shrieked and ran outside, my brother and I in tow to find out what was going on. The scene outside told it all.

Our little neighbor friend was laid out on the ground with Dusty pulling him away from the tracks. You see, a train was coming and the little boy didn't have a clue. Dusty did! He had pushed the little boy off the tracks and was dragging him to safety as we came outside.

Dusty became famous in our neighborhood. I learned later that our little friend's dad had offered us one thousand dollars for our dog, Dusty. How glad I was that my dad said thanks, but no thanks! Dusty lived with us for 13 more years.

Dogs really are man's best friend! There have been two awesome stories in the news recently that have sparked me to write about my beloved friend, Dusty. If you haven't noticed, I am about as sentimental as they come! If you let them, dogs will bring out the best in all of us.

Just a few sentimental thoughts from this ole cowboy.

I always love going to the Nursing Homes with my TDI Dogs. They are so appreciated. None of mine have any rescues in their pasts but eventually I expect to have Gracie to that level. Thanks for sharing your memories. Nothing like a dog story to get people participating.

That's such a lovely story. I never had a dog, I had a sister with asthma, and it would not been unhealthy for her. I have many friends who have dogs though and have seen the joy that they have bought into their lives. It is truly a special relationship and one to always treasure. Thanks for the article I really enjoyed it. gayle

Thanks for reading and liking! I know what you mean about having relatives that have asthma. My aunt had struggles with it for her whole life. She pretty much became a hermit, sadly, but we loved her. Health is a delicate thing and it's better to stay healthy!

Great read McK we have two Labradors and I love them to bits. I look forward to getting home from work to go for a walk with them. Not only are they my mates but they get me out of the house into the fresh air for a good walk something I didn't do much before we had them.

I'm with you! I think I am healthier because of what you said. We have 3 dogs. A great dane, and two border collie mix dogs and they keep this ole cowboy busy getting the door! LOL It's like I am their doorman to let them out, and then they want back in! LOL Just having a little fun. My wife and I go for multiple walks a day and they are excited to go every single time! What a crew we have here. Thanks for sharing, Mark.

This makes me miss my dog, Stinger. It's been about twenty years since he's been gone, but still. And my dog, Butch! I used to ride him like a horse. One of my earliest memories.

I believe that our doggie friends were put here to show and teach us many things. It is our job to figure out everything they are capable of. We're not there yet. Thanks for the wonderful article McK.

Thanks for reading along! I have learned many things from all our animals. I guess it stems from my early upbringing as I stayed at my Grandfather's ranch every summer. He was one to 'listen' to the animals. He truly was an animal lover in the truest sense!

I love that story McK. Dogs are our angels. A German Shepard saved my big sister's life when she was very little. He pulled her off the street when he saw a car coming that was seconds from hitting her. And a little Lhasa kept my mom alive after heart surgery. He loved to make her laugh, which gave her the incentive to live. Dogs are man's best friends.

I got a little chill run up the spine as I read your comment! Dogs are so tuned in to us as human beings, it's amazing. My grandmother spent her last days in a nursing home. The one thing she insisted on was being able to have her dog with her. Took some doing but we found her a home that made an exception. The cool thing was that later this nursing home began have a pets allowed policy. For those that could not care for a pet, one of the other residents or even outsiders would bring their dogs and cats to share with those unable to have their own. It was great to see! Oh and German shepherds are freakin' awesome! Just ask my wife!
