Training your dog is probably the most important thing you could ever do for it. You want your dog to be safe around other people, you want your dog to behave in the confines of your home and not destroy it and you want your dog to be safe and not dash across every busy road. It's safe to say, dog behavior training and dog obedience training are the two most important things you can do for your canine friend.
It is very common to be completely overwhelmed when starting out training a dog. Many people will confirm that the dogs first 'toilet' accident will lead to the first step on your training list. There are many points you will include on your training list such as crate training, sit, stay etc. but the toilet training will come top of the list for obvious reasons. The next point should probably cover your ability to stop your dog chewing everything in sight ( which comes naturally to younger dogs ). Back to safety, teaching your dog to behave when controlled on a dog lead is a big step to keeping your dog safe.
After studying many different dog training techniques they seem to point to the fact that punishment based training is not the way to go. It seems negative reactions to your dogs actions prove to be a negative result in your dog training. Be very positive with the training involving dog treats when your dog has performed the task successfully. Taking this into consideration always remember - some children are slow learners - others pick it up straight away and dogs are no different. Give plenty of attention to your dog and obviously repeat when necessary.
Another point to consider is always look at the breed of the dog. It goes without saying that the breed of dog will affect the outcome and efficiency of your training program. Dogs will have natural traits built into their breed and will affect their behavior. I know this seems quite unrealistic but try to make any training session fun for you and your dog because in the long run it will benefit you both. Always remember dogs, in packs, have leaders and that role is of high importance and influence. Dogs will naturally look to you as their pack leader so try to utilize this to your advantage when training.
Many people get frustrated that their dog jumps up on people when friends visit and can't understand why their dog runs away from them at the park. The simple answer is to begin dog training and if you stick to simple dog obedience rules you will begin to see dramatic improvements in your dogs behavior.
