A lot of people feel very guilty and hate to leave their dogs at home when they are out at work for the day. It can be very expensive to pay for certain daycare facilities or dog walkers every day of the week. Using these facilities may also result in the dog never wanting to be alone at any point and this can turn out to be a huge problem.
The best way to combat a bored dog stuck at home is to use special chewing dog surfaces or products to leave with them. These chewable objects do not include bones of any kind or objects that can be dangerous to the dog without supervision. You can purchase special bones with treats in the middle that will entertain your dog for hours on end. Make sure you give it a treat that it is not given at any other time.
Leaving a dog alone for certain amounts of time is not the only way to cause them fear. Loud noises heard everyday like thunder and fireworks will cause a huge amount of distress to the dog indoors. You should never make your dog endure a frightening situation and you should never comfort the dog by stroking them and telling them everything's alright ( this just tells the dog that it's ok to be afraid and feeds it's fear ).
Another huge complaint when it comes to dogs at home is the subject of digging ( if you are lucky enough to own a garden of some kind ). Digging is a very natural trait of any dog and they perform this task for many different reasons:
- they dig as a form of exploration and excitement
- They enjoy burying many of their favorite objects
- They spot a small creature like a mouse or a mole and decide to go after it
- The soil they dig up is always very cool so they can lay on it or use it as a sleeping area
A dogs main instinct when brought into a home and treated as one of the family is to protect that home and family. Barking is a very annoying habit indoors and outside ( your neighbours won't thank you for it either ). The first thing you should do is find a word that you can use to quiet the dog down instantly like 'Hush' or 'Quiet'. Try not to use a curse because you will probably need to use this word in training outdoors as well. When outdoors use a dog lead and pull it upwards as you use the 'Hush' phrase and remember to praise the dog when it quiets down.
