Dog Training - How To Use A Dog Training Collar

There are many different techniques involved in the process of training your dog. The main technique ( and a very important one at that ) is to make sure your dog knows that you are the alpha dog or 'pack leader'. This is effective but bear in mind this technique will lead to the dog fearing you, are you prepared for that? The other option which is very effective and popular is to train your dog using a dog training collar, these seem a little cruel to your dog but are widely known to be very effective.

Now a dog training collar can seem a little extreme when first purchased. It is likely you will start reading the instructions and think that it may be a little to inhumane. There are three main dog training collars on the market and which one you use is down to your preference. Some of these collars are remote controlled so the owner of the dog can decide when to send a small shock to the dog if it is deemed to be misbehaving. There are other collars that will respond directly to the dogs barking habits and release a small shock. There are also collars that are linked to a invisible beam to stop them from leaving a certain area. When the dog gets near a forbidden area it receives a small shock.

This all sounds pretty abusive to your dog and you are probably put off by this point. You must remember that you control the level of shock to the collar in most cases so make sure you do not over administer the charge. It is only cruel to the animal if you insist on having the charge set on a higher level. A lot of professional dog training schools have abandoned the idea of dog training collars because they find them outdated and tramuatise the dog.

If you do decide that the dog training method is slightly barbaric there are much more tradition techniques of dog training. You may instead want to try rewarding the dog for good, obedient behavior rather than punishing it for bad behavior. A lot of experts think that dogs respond better to being rewarded for good behavior and learn faster this way, there is also the benefit of closer owner and dog bonding this way. If you do have a barking problem and you do not want to use the collar approach you can choose to use a simple muzzle.

So dog training collar or more traditional ways of training - the choice is yours. Remember that whilst the collar may seem a little extreme, you are the one who controls the level of shock given out. This means that they are only cruel if you let them be. Find a technique to train your dog that suits both you and the dog.

A vibrating collar typically works just as well as a shock collar. Positive reinforcement (not just food reward, however, which I dont recomend) is often the most effective
