A dog can be a very impressive sight - full of energy and majestic in every way. In certain aspects of dog training there is an element of weaponry named 'protection dog'. Although this sounds very severe it has been common place for centuries. Protection is all about your ability to control a dog that is trained to respond in violent and extreme situations. Dogs are reasonably 'wild' when young or when first picked up and teaching them how to bite is a relatively easy task. Taking that same dog and teaching it to bite under your complete control is a whole different ball game.
If you pop down to your local breeder and ask them to sell you a protection dog their response will be one worth seeing. If you visit your local town's pets store and ask for a protection dog their reaction will be much the same. Protection dogs are trained to be what they are and are not available to a novice - they are considered a canine weapon and they deserve to be treated with a large degree of respect.
A protection dog's main purpose is to be considered a very loyal 'gaurdian'. A guard dog has very territorial instincts and will protect it's area without thinking twice about it. This also applies with protecting a human ( or yourself ) with a guard dog. These kinds of dogs will protect you fiercely with a simple human command. Therefore, a 'gaurdian' or 'gaurd dog' is a weapon that will protect you, your family and your property without a second thought.
There are several main breeds of dog which can be considered suitable for general 'gaurdian' duties. These breeds include - Russian Terrier, Rottweilers ( the most well known ), English Mastiffs and Giant Schnauzers. Other breeds are suitable at times for protection duties but you must be able to recognize those qualities at a young dog age. The breed you will need to choose for your purposes will depend on what tasks you need the dog to perform. Will you need the dog to be extra protection for your family or young children when they are outside playing? Will you need a dog that has instincts to protect your home or other properties when you are not around? The breed you must choose will depend greatly on the answers to these two questions.
As with all things that are effective in this world, a fully trained protection dog will cost you money. You get what you pay for so do not try to undercut yourself when purchasing a protection dog because the best will cost you.
