Dog’s Mouth Problems – Excessive Saliva Generation

Dogs are amazing and lovely but the drooling makes them look bit untidy or clumsy. There could be some better word used for representing dog drooling but I always find drooling extremely annoying. A beautiful creature, when drools, ruins its personality. No matters how bad drooling looks, it has a very healthy function. Drooling is a mechanism to clean dog's mouth in natural way and to clear excessive bacteria formation inside their mouth. Some dogs are created in a way that their jaws are wide, lips are apart and the sides of their mouth stay open. The gap in the mouth area gives way to saliva that flows when not swallowed back by the dog.

Importance of Saliva

Everyone knows saliva is essential in food lubrication and easy digestion. The saliva is formed naturally in different quantities and this entirely depends of the type, size and age of dog. But whenever there are any health issues present in dogs, they saliva production is either reduced or increased. The reduction, mostly, indicates the deficiency of water in dog's body whereas the excessive formation of saliva means many other things.

Tendency to drool in dogs

Dogs that are hyper-active, extremely playful, energetic and healthy tend to drool more but I have seen those dogs also drool a lot which have no proper outlet for the consumption of their energies. The excitement, happiness, fear and other emotional states are also responsible to increase the amount of saliva in mouth which eventually comes out in form of drooling. Similarly, some dogs have health problems that are represented in form of excessive drooling.

Excessive Saliva as a disease symptom

Sometimes, excessive drooling of dogs needs to be taken seriously. In an article written about dog drooling problems, I read that all mouth problems or oral diseases are responsible for excessive drooling in dogs. Any mouth infections, injuries, dental problems and ingestion of something unsuitable are resulted in excessive drooling. In short, drooling could be seen as a vital sign of major oral diseases.

There are other problems too, that result in profound drooling in dogs. Nausea, stomach sickness, pain, bloating and most importantly rabies could be reasons of hyper-drooling in dogs.

Things to do

People who want to control the excessive drooling of their dogs could only make it possible if they just regularly clean their dog's mouth. Similarly, use wipes to clean the drools before they hit the floor, clothes, furnishings or any equipment. The most important thing is to understand your dog's emotions. When dog is hyper, it will always result in excessive drooling. Make your dog exercise, play and go for walk in order to keep the energy level balanced. Last but not least, keep an eye on dog if it has swallowed something harmful e.g. chemicals. Such cases are common where dogs ingest some unsuitable item and later on they feel nausea. They would keep on drooling until that object or thing is not out of their system.
