Dont Let Your Golden Retriever Drive You Nuts

The Golden Retriever is not much different than other dogs, although they all have or develop their own personalities. Sometimes, they may actually take on the personality of their owner, and other times, it it just part of their genetics.

It would appear that genetics has an effect on everyone everywhere, whether we like it or not. Some dogs are more affected with some problems than others. I know that a Golden Retriever really likes to chew on stuff, and when I say stuff, I mean stuff, like everything.

When puppies, I have never seen a dog that does not like to chew any and every thing that they can get their little mouths on. They have no regard to how expensive, precious, or important something is to you. All that they know, is that their mouth (gums) are driving them crazy, and they need to chew on something to soothe it.

Chewing Tip: Golden Retrievers are notorious for chewing. I have had them chew computer cords, that were unplugged luckily, shoes, pillows, legs of furniture, the edge of the door and much more. You name it, and if they can get their mouth on it, it is going to be chewed up. One way to help solve this problem, is to give them something similar to what we give babies when they are teething. We give them plastic coated frozen pacifiers to chew on. The cold helps to sooth the teething pain. It is the same with your puppy. You don't want to give them a plastic frozen pacifier, but if you put ice chips or cubes in a rag, or even a sock, they can hold this in their mouth and gnaw on it to help soothe the pain of teething.

You can keep several of these handy in your freezer, so when your puppy needs something to chew on, you will have a cold chew toy to keep them occupied, while soothing their pain. You don't want to leave the room while your puppy is chewing on this, because it can start coming apart, and you do not want them to swallow any of the rag or sock.

Digging Tips: This is another thing that is natural for dogs, especially Golden Retrievers. They don't seem to realize that they cannot simply go out into your yard, and start digging holes everywhere, or even worse, go and dig in your neighbors yard.

Don't punish your dog for digging, as I said, it is just a part of their nature. It is a natural instinct for them. What you need to do, if possible is to section off a small section of your yard, preferably the back yard, and make this an area that belongs to them. They can dig here, and it won't be interfering with any other part of your yard, or that of some one else.

You can put a kiddie pool in that area if you want to, but if the area is large enough, you can put a sandbox in their area and fill it with sand or dirt, which ever that you prefer.

We have two Golden Retrievers, and they have gone through the chewing as well as the digging phase. What they enjoy the most now, at least during the warm months, is to lay down in the kiddie pool with it full of water. I have never seen a dog love the water as much as Golden Retrievers.

When we take them to the lake, they can hardly contain themselves, they are so anxious to jump into the water. We throw balls or kongs(long tennis ball material toys) into the water and they swim out and bring them back. I think that they could honestly do this 24 hours a day, non stop.

You may have a few problems with them to start with, but once you find out what helps them, they will outgrow the phases, and you will find that you have a wonderful loving pet. They are extremely loving, affectionate, and loyal. They give you unconditional love, and you should treat your dog with love, not anger.
