Enjoying The Neighbourhood

Enjoying a sense of community and the characters therein is as close as taking the kids, dog and us, for a walk down the street to the local park.

There’s no better way to feel good about the neighbourhood we live in than to get out and enjoy it. Even for a few moments at the end of the day.

It’s fun, clears the head and helps you understand the different types that make us the society that we are.

We opted to head out the back gate, through the bush reserve, where our dog loves to run and sniff, and back via the small park where the children love to play.

It’s not far from home and the melting pot of personalities was enjoyable.

Ralph and Storm have already beat us there to enjoy the cool of the late afternoon. They’re really local identities. Up until recently there were three retiree friends who met on the local corner for their walk and gossip at the park bench.

Late last year Buddy died and no doubt the others still sorely miss him. Ralph never says much. He’s perhaps the oldest and maybe the wisest! In all the time I’ve known him I never have learnt much about him.

Storm is the most interesting. Tall and lanky I do know he was a great runner and his ‘nickname’ one that has lingered from days of former glory when he no doubt owned the track.

I marvel that these older ones put up with, and even seem to enjoy, the exuberance of the kids playing. The kids come and go with adult in tow. There’s always lots of noise and rough housing before moving on with a regretful backward glance.

There’s always someone new to meet as well. Today it was two young girls who were out for a jog. They could have been twins with their auburn hair flowing behind them and the loveliest spring in their step.

They stopped for a moment too and introductions were made all round. Willow and Shiloh?? Oh PUH-LEASE!!

I couldn’t stop grinning to see the older ones drooling with the young and their sudden renewed interest and vigor for life.

More eye rolling as even my husband stopped playing to come for a closer look.

Off they trotted again. Blissfully unaware of the undisguised admiration in their wake.

Played out we make our good-byes and head up our street on the way home. We’re all happy and our dog, Houston, has his tail high and his smile wide.

We have a great group in our neighbourhood. Now if only I could remember their owners’ names too.

I find our neighbourhood an inspiration for some of my articles. I love to observe people and to talk to them. There are always so many differing characters to meet. The pets that you meet can be as inspirational as the owners. I love it, as I do the article.

Thanks Rob. I remember your article on watching the joggers go by and the contemplation on if the dogs were enjoying the run! Made me smile. This is what street articles is best at. Sharing our life experiences.

Enjoyed your article! Even though we don't have a dog in our family right now we like to go walk around the outside of our dog park and watch the dogs and their families.
