Experiences With Raising Huskies

Siberian Husky

Raising and training a Husky can be a very frustrating experience. After having three of them, two pure bred and a Husky Shepard mix, the days of running and finding runaways seems like yesterday. Huskies are very loyal but independant dogs. They require a lot of space and love to run. My oldest female could run a corn field in seconds and if she had the chance she would be gone from your side in a minute.

Husky Puppies

I have raised two Huskies from puppies. They can be very challenging and are very good at digging, climbing or biting their way out of their quarters. They are very strong willed and do not take commands until they know that you are the "pack" leader. They also have a very strong packing instinct and there can be some fighting and a pack hiearchy over objects and food. It is best to take your pups to obedience training when it is possible. You may not think a Husky can pass this training, but it is possible, both of the female Huskies I had passed their training. It is a difficult process, because Huskies seem to be easily distracted and when you attend the training their are a lot of other dogs present.

Older Huskies

I have had a little luck with my Huskies when they were older having them off leash. I usually only did this at home and not for very long periods of time. I found that as soon as a Husky knows it is off leash, it will bolt. Huskies love to run, they are bred for it, and they want to run at any opportunity. I always had to have my Huskies in a kennel, where they could use their inside quarters and go outside at will. They love cold weather, and I would sometimes find them sleeping outside in the snow when it was near zero degrees. As they grew older though they usually slept inside in a straw bed under a heat lamp.

Husky Longevity

Huskies can live a long life, if they are given the correct diet and exercise. My two females lived up to about 12 years old and my Husky Shephard mix is still living at 15 years old (he lives in the house now because of his old age).
