Feeding Time

If you are a cat lover, than it is very likely you will be bored by the following article. This particular article is about dogs and the two which roam our house. We do have a cat named Calico, which is quite an inventive and obvious name. She is a not only a calico cat but one that I refer to as a "hermit amongst our midst" cat. When feeding time comes along or some needful attention, the sweetness of this cat finally comes out.

Yet these times of break through with our hermit cat gets disrupted by the maniac nature of Snickers. Snickers is a miniature fox terrier and her rambunctiousness earned her the Twitter name @nacholibredog. There is not a single movement of person, animal, bug or leaf that this dog doesn't notice. Feeding time for Calico becomes a challenge to say the least.

It all begins with movement through the kitchen to the pantry where the cat food is kept. Ears perked up and full attention given to my every move becomes the primary engagement of Snickers. Straight to the pantry door before I can reach for the handle. She knows full well what is going to happen next and remains two steps ahead of me.

One would think that as much as this dog understands what I am doing, she would also understand that this exercise is not for her. But on the off chance a scrap or drop of canned cat food gravy might drip to the floor, well you get the picture. Not so with the other dog, my older son's Cairn Terrier who goes by the name of Maggie.

If you could have two dogs with complete opposite personalities, these two would be your example. As Snickers jumps and anxiously gets pumped up, Maggie casually comes around the corner simply to see what all of the fuss is. I firmly believe that I have seen her shake her head in exaggerated disbelief at Snicker's exuberance.

The differences do not end with the ADHD nature of Snickers and Maggie's mellow stubborness. Take for instance the "athletic" ability of each. Snicker's is a wiry, long legged canine that can jump high enough to nearly look me in the eye. With the speed of a greyhound and the energy to match, it feels like slow motion as you walk and she runs in lightening quick fashion around you.

Maggie on the other hand pokes along on her own time. She will look at you and make a decision to come along but only if it suits her to do so. She even fancies herself as a leaping frog with legs shorter than her ears. Jumping up on the couch is always an amazing feat, only to climb further onto the back of the couch. It is her perch from which her kingdom spreads out across the coffee table and carpeted floor.

Each of these dogs have personalities that seem human-like at times, just like Calico does. We get drawn into almost treating them as humans when all they hear is, "Blah, blah, blah, Maggie. Blah, blah, blah, Snickers." And I do realize it is more than just that. There is a connection that exists between all living things. Just come around when I feed Calico and you will see what I mean.

I agree whole heartedly with Heather I felt as though I was there with you. My two dogs just have the same personalities as yours. My one dog is 10 and the other 2 years old, the older will look at me as if saying "are you off your rocker" with some of my requests where the other will jump to it, I think because he is expecting a reward, and when it is not forthcoming he tends to stand and stare me in the eye for hours. I wish I could explain their personalities as well as you have yours.

Joseph your article has me grinning a mile wide. What a painting of words! I can just see it all playing out! As an aside, I also have a Calico cat which I only know because my husband is North American. We call them all Tortoiseshells it seems. I leant that Calicos are generally white based females and the Tortoiseshells black. Everyone comments on the uniqueness of my cat and her interesting colours. We called her (inventively! lol) Calico which quickly became Calli (in true Australian fashion as we shorten or add an 'ee' sounds to the end of many words). She's here with me now showing her pure snow white belly to the world. My Calli is a real dog hater... very disdainful.... I can only imagine what she'd think of your Snickers!! lol
