Fleas Bite!

Our dog, Maggie had fleas. One flea jumped on me as I laid down on the bed in our den. I knew what a flea was as my apartment had them in college, some 20 years ago now. Hard to believe it's been 20 years since my wild college days.

I called my husband and told him about the flea. We agreed that we needed to act quickly! We called our pest services, and they informed us of a checklist of items, things we needed to do before they would come out. It was a very long list of vacuuming, mopping, cleaning every nook and cranny in the house. Then they asked when we could have everything done by, and that would dictate when they would come out to treat the house. It was Thursday, we had a weekend coming up and I figured it would take the weekend to really get everything done, and done right.

Monday it was. We called the vet and scheduled appointments for the cat and the dog for Monday as well, so that they would not be in the house during the flea treatment and so that they could have flea baths and treatments as well. It had been 3 years since the dog had even been to the vet, so she needed her rabies shot anyway, as did the cat.

The weekend came and went with cleaning, vacuuming, room by room. We went on line and learned about a Borax treatment that we could do that would assist in killing fleas, so we laid down Borax, let it sit for 8 hours, then vacuumed it all up again. Room by room, making sure that everything was picked up. The den had been a disaster of papers strewn about, so it was good to be able to pick everything up and clean. It was probably a blessing in disguise, forcing us to do a deep cleaning of the house.

Monday came, the dog and cat went to the vet, although, I couldn't find the cat carrier, so the cat went in a copy paper box. The vet was very good to not judge me, and sent me home with a cardboard cat carrier. $365 later, the cat and dog were flea free and up to date on all their vaccines and shots.

Got home and finished the last couple things I had to do. Was vacuuming the back porch when the pest service showed up. I told him what we had done with the Borax, and he advised that if we had done the Borax, we didn't need him to do anything else, as it is essentially Borax that they use too. Who knew?!

But, just in case we had missed some, I asked him to do his treatment anyway. It had been 3-4 days and if any of the flea eggs had hatched, I wanted to be sure to kill them all.

It's now been a week and a half and no fleas to report. Although, I've seen the dog scratch a couple of times (literally twice), as soon as I see that, I spray the spot with the Adams Flea & Tick Mist. No other fleas have been around. We have left overs of the Borax, just in case. Although, I've found lots of uses for it.

What a cleaning job you had to do. It's funny that the flea removal service was going to use the very product you used. We had to use borax back in my college days to kill roaches. Hope little Maggie is all over her flea adventure. She's really cute.
