Captain Max von Stephanitz delivered us the German Shepherd dog in the early 1890s and is now considered the father of this particular dog breed. Max von Stephanitz was a great fan of the common sheepdog and decided to shape that breed into his own perfect dog with many varying qualities. Since then the German Shepherd breed is recognized for many different attributes:

- They are known for being an easy dog to pick for various levels of training. - They are loyal and intelligent - They have a very high endurance level.

It is their ease of training that led to the invention of the Schutzhund training program. Schutzhund was developed in Germany around the turn of the twentieth century. In the German language Schutzhund means 'protection dog' and the Schutzhund training program was based on this principle. This program was also responsible for the German Shepherd eventually being used as police dogs.

There are two main differences in the genders of the German Shepherd breed. Males are considered more protective and "territorial" of the home they occupy and females are more protective of the people who live in the home. Females are also said to be the much more affectionate gender of the breed. The main reason people choose the male dog over the female dog in this breed is because they do not have to deal with the female dog being 'on heat' twice a year.

Because of their perfect skills as police dogs, many people wrongly think the German Shepherd are dangerous dogs or violent, attack dogs. This is not true and many families house them as successful members of the family - they are, after all, easy to train and very obedient because of their high level of intelligence. If you manage to purchase a German Shepherd as a puppy they will grow to have a very strong bond with you and the other family members for the rest of their life.

The German Shepherd dog is considered to be one of the world's most attractive dogs. Their main feature are their ears which point erect when they are alert. The most common color of the shepherd's coat is black and tan. This breed of dog also known as 'Alsatian' normally has quite a long haired coat and the only way to tell if the dog will grow to have a longer-style coat is if they have tufts of hair between their toes when they are puppies. German Shepherd puppies are usually very small but when they grow fully they can weigh up to 85 pounds. A new born German Shepherd will weigh about one pound and looks very different to what it will look like when it matures fully.
