Getting A New Dog

So you have decided to get a dog. Congratulations! Getting a dog is an important decision and whether it is going to be your very first or your nth dog there are important things to be considered. Here are some helpful hints. Read on before you take the step!

1. Getting a dog is a responsibility. I cannot stress this enough. Sometimes people get dogs all for the wrong reasons. Remember, you are getting a living, breathing, eating creature. You cannot just put it away in a closet once you get tired of it. Make sure that every family members including the kids know that. It will be a lot of fun for them to play and frolic with the new member of the family but make sure they also know that work is involved. Assign a task for each family member. Have somebody in charge for cleaning up, feeding, walking and any other things that may come up.

2. Get a dog that is suited for you. You cannot decide on getting a large breed dog if you live in a one bedroom apartment. Why not get a small dog if that is the case? A big yard or space to run around in would be the more appropriate surrounding for a large breed of dog.

3.Make sure that your house is dog safe before taking him home. Check that all toxic materials are out of reach. Check on wirings because your dog might chew on these and can be dangerous.

4.If you have other dogs or pets at home, consider how they will react to the new member of the household. Upon bringing home your dog for the first time, introduce him to your other pets and see if they get along. Do not leave them alone immediately because you have to watch out for any signs of aggression on both parties. It is natural for dogs, especially males to be territorial. The alpha dog would not want his rank taken so he will show the new dog whose the boss. Eventually they will get used to the new company and will warm up to him.

5.Get all essentials like dog food, feeding/ drinking dish, leash, collar ready before you take your new dog home. All other things like toys, bathing and grooming stuff can be bought later.

6 .Check for a nearby veterinarian if you don't have one yet. Ask around. Chances are, your neighbors who already have pets would recommend one to you. Make sure to bring your new dog to your veterinarian for a check up once you get him home. You may want to discuss immunizations, flea treatment and prevention and also his diet with your vet.

Getting a new dog is exciting but at the same time needs planning. If you haven't decided yet on where to get your dog, consider adopting from pet shelters or from the humane society. There are a lot of dogs and other pets out there looking for love and a new home. I hope you find the perfect one for you!
