Getting To Understand Your Dogs Needs

Wouldn't it be nice if we could sit down besides our pets, and just talk to them about how things are going? Ask them questions like, "Do you like your food?" or "Did you enjoy barking at that squirrel yesterday for twenty minutes straight?". Of course it would be nice to just strap on a collar that would translate everything, but unfortunately this isn't UP. In order to really get a feel for what your dog is needing, it will be important to understand YOUR dog, because not all dogs have the same nutritional needs. This will be based on things such as breed, size, daily activity, and more.

Understanding Your Dog

Just like humans, dogs have different nutritional needs. This is primarily based on your dogs size, and how much activity your dog is getting on a daily basis. it is important to know how much to be feeding, and when. Typically, 2-3% of your dogs weight is how much you want to feed them per day. You also want to implement how active your dog is. If he/she is sleeping most of the day, your going to want a diet consisting of less protein. Too much protein in a non-active lifestyle will put unnecessary stress on the liver. On the other hand, if your pet is constantly active, more protein and other nutrients will be better. Note: This is just a general guideline. You should consult your veterinarian about further questions or concerns, for you will get the most accurate answers about your pets specific needs.

If you wouldn’t eat it, neither should your dog

Ok.. I think most people wouldn’t want to eat dog food, but you get the point. Just because it is edible, doesn’t mean you should eat it. When it comes to Canis lupus familiaris, or more commonly known as dogs, there are certain foods that as much as they would love to gobble down in record time, simply are not good for them. It is very important that you know what “people” foods, and even dog foods are healthy vs. unhealthy. Before purchasing a certain brand of food, you may want to consider looking at the ingredients to ensure it DOES NOT include any artificial ingredients, colorings, preservatives, or fillers. Fillers are something you especially want to look out for. There are many commercial dog foods out there that contain fillers that have very little to no nutritional value at all. If you see Ingredients such as cereal by-products, feathers, soy, or anything corn related, avoid these at all costs. These have been know to cause many problems with pets, and the last thing we want is problems!

Natural this, natural that..

Natural this, natural that.. It seems to be a pretty popular trend these days. But is it all what is’t hyped up to be? And are these so called “natural” products really worth the extra buck. To help better our understanding, we’ll need to dig a little deeper on what it means to be “natural”. Existing in or caused by nature; not made by humankind, is the true definition. So this is pretty clear, right? Well, when it comes to foods, its a different story. Legally, for foods to be labeled “natural”, they must contain zero artificial ingredients, coloring ingredients, or chemical preservatives. These things are considered unnatural for a good reason, simply because they are not supposed to be inside our bodies!

Bottom line

Dogs are extremely resilient creatures, but that doesn't mean their diet should be disregarded. If you truly love and care for your dogs health, spending a little extra time and effort to ensure their overall health and happiness should be no problem. If you've made it this far into the article, you are more than less a caring pet owner, and I appreciate your time.
