Getting Your Dog To Listen To You

How do you get your dog to listen to you? Do you bribe him or try to coax him to mind you by giving him treats? Do you yell at him?

Before you start training your pet you must let your dog know that you are the top dog of the family and that you are in charge.

Some do's and dont's that you should know if you want to guarantee that you are considered the top dog or the one in charge are:

  • When coming in or out of a door always make sure you come through first, because your are the head of the pack.
  • When you are eating you should finish your meal first then feed the dog.
  • If your dog is laying in the way do not circle around him, you should make him move out of your way.
  • Don't let your dog decide what is right, pay notice to him when you feel it is right and not when the dog thinks you should take notice.
  • This is the hardest one for many of you, do not let your dog sleep with you. He should have his own sleeping area that he goes to when it is time to go to bed.

Once you have established yourself as the leader all of your dog training will come more easily. If your dog will not listen to you the all of his training will be for nothing.

Does your dog look at you and listen when you call his name? If he does not take notice to you calling his name you will be unable to teach him any other commands. This is the first and most important step in training your dog.

To get your dog to respond and look at you when calling his name you can take a treat and hold it in your hand. When you call his name he will most likely be looking at the treat, call your dog by name holding on to the treat until he looks into your eyes. Now you will give your dog the treat immediately. Follow the same course placing the treat in the other hand. Continue this until you are sure he recognizes his name, then call him by his name without the treat and when he looks at you and then answers, you will give him a pat or a hug and let him know he was a "good boy".

One of the most important things that you can learn is that dogs always react better to confirmatory action than any type of compulsive or forceful action.

These steps should help you in bonding and training your dog.
