Guide Dog Attacks Are Increasing

Due to irresponsible dog owners the Guide Dog Association has asked for tougher laws relating to guide dog attacks. The incidents of attacks on guide dogs from other dogs is on the rise and there seems to little that anybody can do about it let alone prosecute the owners of these dogs.

This is affecting the owners of these amazing dogs in more ways than one, not only is it traumatic for the dog and the owner it effects the mobility of these people. They are losing confidence and not wanting to venture outdoors in fear of their precious dogs being attacked by someone else's dog, defeating the purpose of the guide dog!

Because these attacks are not regarded as a criminal offence The Guide Dog Association is finding it difficult if not impossible to prosecute the irresponsible owners of the animals, you can't blame the animal as far I'm concerned if you own an aggressive dog it's up to you to make sure that your dog is not put into situations where something like this may occur and do something about your dogs aggression towards other dogs..

There is plenty of training and advise available, there is just no excuse! If owners were held more accountable for their dogs and penalized more harshly I think they'd would think twice about doing the right thing and getting off their behinds and dealing with their dogs behavioural issues. It is food for thought for people that have dogs who don't socialize with other dogs well. They need to address the issue and take it more seriously.

According to an article in BBC News across the UK attacks on guide dogs average seven per month. Some dogs have been forced to retire because of the physical and psychological damage caused and if that's not bad enough some owners have had to endure more than one attack, one woman had been attacked six times if you can believe it! One time outside a coffee shop where the owner of the dog responsible punched her guide dog several times while trying to get their dog to let go.

As one owner stated "an attack on his guide dog was the equivalent to himself being attacked, until the dog law changes and makes owners more responsible for their dogs it seems there's little the police can do to prosecute owners. The amount of time and money that goes into training these dogs is considerable and to think that it is wasted when the poor animal has to be retired because of the damage done is shocking.

When you read something like this it really does bring home the responsibility of dog ownership, so many people get dogs on a whim because they look cute and cuddly as puppies and then when they become a nuisance they can't be bothered to train them and put the time into their dogs. The poor dog gets blamed for their bad behaviour, and a dog that could have been a great asset is viewed as a nuisance or worse a danger to society. Unfortunately in some cases dumped, or having to be put down!

If you own a dog and think that it has issues especially with regard to aggression with people or other animals this article really brings home the importance of addressing the issue. Imagine how these people must feel when their trusted companions are viciously attacked out of the blue, for seeing people it is bad enough let alone somebody who is blind!

Having been a puppy raiser fr upstate guide dogs (when they were still open) and as a dog trainer now, this topic is one that concerns me.Dog to dog aggression is a serious problem and one that we encounter all the time. Sometimes it is caused by the owner's attitude that their dog can do no wrong. Often it is because the dogs were not properly socialized early in life. Sometimes it is caused by fear in the dog (fear aggression). In all cases, there should be intervention by the authorities. It would be a wonderful thing if a dog aggression incident required a mandatory class with the owner and dog undergoing obedience training. When this occurs against a well trained Guide Dog, the offender should be removed from its home and the dog should be evaluated by a trained Canine Professional. If rehabilitation is possible then a court should make this mandatory for both dog and Owner.
