Harnesses Vs Collars: Which is Better?

Have you ever thought of using a harness on your dog instead of a collar?

Harnesses vs. collars, which do you think is better? How do you know what is best for your dog?

A Collar is So Much Easier!

Why, you wonder, would anyone want to go through the trouble of putting a harness on a dog when a collar is so simple to put on? In fact, most people just leave a collar on their dogs 24/7 and take them off only to give them a bath.

I know a lot of people just use a plain old collar when walking their dog, but if you have one of those dogs that are hard to control, using a harness just may work for you. In my experiences with the dogs I have and the dogs I've owned in the past using a harness does help make your walking experience a more enjoyable one.

Reasons I Use a Harness on My Dogs

  • Gives more control
  • More humane
  • No more worries of your dog slipping away on you

My Dog Pulls Me Everywhere!

Do you take your dog for a walk only to end up coming home frustrated? Not only frustrated, but maybe a little embarrassed wondering how many of your neighbors seen the spectacle of you getting dragged down the street by your dog?

I had this same problem in the past with some of our dogs, which just couldn't stay by my side. It was rather humiliating taking our dogs for a walk. I've owned a few dogs during my lifetime that would take me for a walk every day.

Our dog, Pepper, would pull and pull. Maybe it's because she's part Husky, or maybe she's just so full of energy!

Enough is Enough!

After getting almost pulled off my feet one too many times, I decided to try out a harness on her. I had seen there were harnesses that were supposed to be "no pull" in the pet store, so I figured I'd give it a try.

I was willing to at least try this new no pull harness thinking, "well, at least I'll know if it works or not instead of wondering about it every time I go for a walk and get dragged around everywhere."

The No Pull Dog Harnesses

After trying these new "no pull" dog harnesses, I realized how much better it is to take our dogs for a walk. Sure, it didn't completely stop them from pulling, like it says, but it sure helped a lot!

I found she wasn't able to pull as hard at all when using these harnesses on them. No more getting dragged down the street, trying in vain to keep up with the dog, yelling "stop it!" and almost falling on my face.

Your Dog is Choking Itself to Death!

"Well, Sally must be taking her dog, Fido, for a walk again.I can hear them coming!" as you hear loud hacking and coughing coming your way, AAAACCKK, AAACCCKK, AAACCKK!

Of course your dog isn't actually choking itself to death, but it sure sounds like it! I've had that experience when walking our dogs with just a regular collar. They'd just keep on going whether they were sounding like they're being strangled or not.

Of course, I'd feel guilty! I felt terrible every time they started yanking on their leash enough that they started to cough and wheeze. But, what could I do about it if the dog kept pulling just enough to cause this? Nothing at all!

That's another reason I switched to using a harness instead of a collar with all of our dogs. I think they are more humane than having something around only the dog's neck. It seems all of our dogs often did this little choking act when we'd go for our daily walk.

Collar Slipping Dog!

Have you ever had the experience of walking your dog only to find you are walking a collar down the road? I certainly have! One minute the dog was there behind me on its leash and then I looked back only to find a collar dragging along while my dog, Pepper, was busy frolicking in the neighbor's yard.

What a time trying to get her back too! She was having so much fun as I tried to catch her since there was nothing to grab onto now that I was holding her collar and leash in my hand.

Switching to a no pull harness solved this problem too. No more walking an empty collar! Once you have that harness on your dog and adjust it to fit properly, your dog will stay in it.

Still wondering whether a harness is better than a collar? You can read more about no pull dog harnesses and find out if these would work for you, errr, I mean your dog!

Hi Cynthia, Yes, they certainly do make such a difference when taking our dogs out for a walk. All of our dogs have harnesses now instead of using their collar when going out for a walk. It just seems more humane for all of us, lol. Dogs aren't choking and hacking and I'm not getting dragged almost off my feet anymore. Thank you so much for reading and commenting! Best wishes! ;)

It does seem better all around. I've seen both as I walk daily - and am now aware of the difference;)

Hi Kymee, I think it probably all depends on the dog and how well they are trained when it comes to the big dogs. Our Old English Bulldog does pretty well no matter if he wears a collar or a harness and so does his baby, Jade. Although there are times with her that she gets a bit rambunctious like her mother (Pepper, the Husky mix) and is better off using a harness. I certainly agree with you that the little ones usually do much better with a harness for some reason. Plus, I'm always afraid of hurting their tiny little necks even if they're the ones doing all the pulling, lol. Thanks for reading and commenting! Best wishes to you!
