Dog Health Dogs can suffer from many ailments and illnesses in its lifetime that can affect dog health. A lot of illnesses can be avoided simply by keeping your dogs vaccinations, flea and worming treatments up, having your dog eat a balanced diet and exercising your dog daily. A happy dog is a healthy dog, the more you keep them entertained the better they can do.

However, there are ailments that are serious that may need to be treated. Most dog health issues will happen later in life. Dogs can suffer from similar things as humans as they get older such as heart problems, organ problems (kidney disease for example) and bone issues. A dogs life expectancy on average is around 15 years and it is an unfortunate experience that most dog owners go through when their dog dies, sometimes it is more humane to put down our loved ones due to their suffering.

There are hundreds of different diseases that are out, below is a general descriptions of the types of ailments about. For more information or if you think your dog has something we recommend talking to your vet immediately. Due to the amount out there, and the various names that can be used we will only cover diseases broadly.

Fungal Diseases Perhaps one the more common fungal diseases is ringworm which is an infection of the skin, hair or nails. Signs of ringworm are hair loss and skin scaling. Ringworm can be contagious for even humans. Fungal diseases can be transferred between dogs or by exposing dogs to infected soil, decaying vegetation and feces – or even through the air. Ensure that you clean up your dogs feces daily and keep them up to date with vaccinations, worming and flea treatment. If your dog is displaying strange behaviours such as excessive scratching, biting or licking or if you notices something wrong with your dog get them to your local vet as soon as you can.

Bacterial Diseases Dog bacterial diseases are not commonly transferred from dog to dog and are usually result from cuts or scratches. There are dog to dog bacterial diseases such as kennel cough, but again a dog that is kept up to date with vaccinations and common treatments will generally avoid most issues.

Skin Diseases Dogs with skin disease can be quite common. There are numerous reasons dogs get a skin disease and can be split up into five categories: fungal, bacterial, allergic, parasites, and hormonal/hereditary. If you find your dog obsessively scratching get your dog to the vet. Also, keep up with flea treatments.

Infectious Diseases An infectious disease can be caused by the existence of organisms such as parasites, viruses, fungi, bacteria. Most infectious diseases are passed from dog to dog and can be an issue to public health as well such as rabies. However, a vaccinated dog is likely to avoid most infectious diseases. Regular vet visits will ensure that you protect your dog as much as possible especially if your dog frequents dog kennels.

Parasites External parasites such as fleas and ticks are the most common parasites and can be as troublesome to humans as they can to dogs. Various mites can cause skin problems like mange. Internal parasites such as tapeworms and roundworms can be transferred via dog feces which makes cleaning up after your dog very important and keeping them away from other dog/animal feces as much as you can. Left untreated in cats, dogs or humans parasites can cause some severe issues. However, once again, keeping you dog up to date with vaccinations and especially flea treatment will limit your dogs exposure. When cleaning up after your dog examine their feces for tiny work looking things, if there is something there that looks like a worm get your dog (and if possible bag the evidence and take it with you – the vet or people who are near you might not like the smell but it will make the diagnosis quick) to your vet.

Genetic Diseases Genetic diseases can be perhaps the hardest thing to detect especially if the parents of your dog are not known. Pure breeds tend to suffer the most from genetic diseases. If you are buying a pure breed ensure that the breeder is registered with your local breeder organisation. If the breeder is not registered, or if their puppies parents are not registered be skeptical, dogs that aren’t registered with a local authority often have been refused registration due to the dog having genetic issues. There is little that can be done to prevent genetic diseases and sometimes it can end badly. We recommend multi breed dogs as you can avoid a lot of the issues that a pure breed may suffer from.

These are just some of the possible dog diseases out there that your dog can suffer from. As they get older internal organs can start to have issues. Whilst you can’t protect your dog by putting them in a bubble you can keep your dog up to date with vaccinations, flea and worming treatments as well as regular vet visits. Keeping your dog on a healthy diet, exercising them everyday and ensure that they are challenged mentally with training and games will help keep your dog health as best as you can.

Life can be unexpected at the best of times and we never know what is around the corner. Enjoy the time you have with your healthy dog everyday as we just can’t predict the future as much as we sometimes want to!
