Holiday Time for Your Pet

Here it is the holiday season again and we are getting the house all decked out with lights and everything else. It seems to get bigger every year. More of this and more of that. And with doing that, lets not forget about the pets.

We want our pets to enjoy the holidays just as much as we do, so we need to use some common sense and good judgement. Some of the things we need to do for our pets are pretty basic and we might forget to do them.

Make sure that your tree's anchored so that it will not fall or tip over if it is hit by your pet by accident. When it comes to decorating the tree, keep wires, glass or plastic ornaments and batteries out of reach of your pet. A wire can deliver a lethal electrical shock and a punctured battery can cause burns to the mouth and esophagus. A broken ornament can damage your pets mouth. Do not hang long stringy things from the tree, like tinsel, ribbon and yarn. Those things are a feline's dream to see things like that.

Do not feed your pet food from the table. Some of the meat is very fatty and that is not good for your pet. Also, do not give your pet chocolate or candy. Feeding your pet these products can result in vomiting and can make your pet very sick.

Holiday plants can be deadly. Pointsettias, amaryllis, holly and misletoe are traditional and beautiful plants that your pet my ingested, causing vomiting, diarrhea, or even more serious problems. Be on the safe side of things, buy silk plants. You can use them every year and save yourself some money.

When it comes time to open the gifts, enjoy and take lots of pictures. But at the same time discard ribbons and the wrappings. Pet safety dictates that after you open the gifts, dispose of the paper and ribbon right away. Your pet can take that ribbon in a flash and could hurt your pet if not noticed

If you are going to have family or friends over for the holidays, make sure that you have a safe and quiet place for your pet. Make sure there is fresh water and a place to snuggle.

You can have a safe and better holiday when you know that your pets are safe. Just remember to use a little common sense during the holidays. Your pet wants to enjoy it just as much as you do.
