How To Choose A Dog Breed

The AKC (American Kennel Club) states that almost 40% of all homes in the US have a dog. That being said, if you're contemplating becoming part of the 40% club, it's extremely important you have a few facts before venturing into dog ownership.

Choosing a breed of dog is not as simple as it seems. Picking a dog can be a complicated endeavor. Selecting a dog breed based on how the dog looks, or because someone you know has the same type or just because you saw one on the internet or TV is NEVER the correct way to select a dog.

The right companion dog for you should be based on two things: YOUR lifestyle and the inherent tendencies of the dog breed itself. It's important that your honest with yourself about things concerning dog ownership such as: the amount of time you can commit to the dog in areas such as excercise, grooming and nurturing. If you over-estimate how much time you will be able to spend with the dog, you may both loose out. The dog will loose out if you cannot spend as much time in the excercise element and may "reward" you with distructive behavior they use to exhaust spent up energy that would otherwise be run off excercising. In turn, you loose out on a greater companion because of frustration with a disobedient dog. Not having enough time for grooming can also effect a dog negatively resulting in a dog that does not look as he should or worse, leading to health problems such as skin irritations and hair matting.

Your lifestyle also plays a very integral part in the breed of dog you choose. If you live in a small apartment or have little or no axcess to an outdoor play area, the dog may become a handful to control as in destructive behavior inside or even relieving itself in your living area!

The size of the breed you choose should be relevant to the size of the area you live in and outdoor space available. Don't choose a Mastiff if you have a yard more suited for a dachshund. Just because you like a breed for whatever reason, make sure the two of you fit as far as your lifestyle is concerned. It's always better to wait before you adopt a campanion dog then to try to fit a dog into an otherwise uncomfortable lifestyle for either one of you.

In order to choose a breed of dog that suits you and your lifestyle, we suggest to first start by checking out breeds of dogs by the dog groups defined by the AKC. This will help you in chooseing a breed of dog for both your and the dogs lifestyle.
