How to Cope With Dog Separation Anxiety

Your dog is your companion and should be loved and secure but what happens when your dog loves you to extreme. You cannot leave him by himself because he barks excessively, cries or whines. He cannot bear to be separated from you for any length of time. Whenever you put your shoes on he starts to act strangely. It is like he knows you are going out without him even though nothing has been said. Your dog could be suffering from Dog Separation Anxiety.

It is a difficult situation when your dog suffers from this because you feel guilty for leaving them. They have become too dependant on you. There are several things you can do to try and help the situation. Firstly, have a word with your vet and see if there is a need for some medication to help your dog cope. Try walking your dog before you go out. A tired dog is a calmer dog. Make a den for your dog - something that he feels comfortable in and just for him. You love your dog and you want to show him you love him but try not to be too demonstrative. Back off a little. Do not ignore him completely - just tone it down a little. When you go out and leave him start off leaving him for 10 minutes at a time and extend it a little day by day. Do not make any fuss when you are leaving or when you return. Make it seem like it is perfectly natural. Try leaving the radio on. Maybe some noise in the house will help. If all this fails then maybe it would be best to try a behavioural expert.

There are times when you need to go out and it would be impossible to take your dog with you. If you wanted to go to a movie or theatre, shopping or work. Although you love your dog you cannot always be there for him. He needs to be made a little more independent. I have two dogs and they don't like being left on their own but they just settle down and wait for me to return. In extreme cases of Dog Separation Anxiety, the dog can start attacking things in the house like scratching doors or furniture, tearing up cushions etc.

I hope these tips can help you cope with Dog Separation Anxiety and this can reduce the stress on your dog and you.
