How to Get Rid Of Fleas on Dogs

Learn how to get rid of fleas on dogs in 6 steps. Getting rid of fleas on our dogs can be a daunting task. It's actually not very difficult, it just takes a little bit of effort and time.

I'm going to walk you through the process of getting rid of fleas on your dog, step by step.

The first thing you need to do is check your dog's skin. You are looking for any noticeable signs that your dog's skin is irritated. Fleas can cause hot spots and raw, red skin that can be very uncomfortable for your dog. If you're dog is showing signs of irritated skin patches they may be allergic to the fleas saliva, so they're extra sensitive to the bites.

If you find any hot spots or patches of red irritated skin on your dog, you'll want to purchase an oatmeal based fleas shampoo for your dogs flea bath. The oatmeal based flea shampoos soothe the irritated skin, while still delivering an effective flea killing ingredient.

Now lets get down to the flea removal from your dog:

Step 1: You're going to fill a tub or sink, depending on the size of your dog, with comfortably warm water. You need to have enough room to fill the water high enough, so only your pets neck and head can be sticking out.

I fill my tub up halfway for my dog, before putting him into the water. Then I'm able to keep the water running with fresh clean water when it's time to rinse the shampoo off of him.

Step 2: When your dog is in the water, you'll want to put a liberal amount of the flea shampoo in a straight line down their back. Start at the neck, right behind the ears, going straight down to the tail.

Rub the flea shampoo into your dog's skin, making a very thick lather on their entire body. Don't forget the legs and feet of your dog.

With the shampoo still on your dog, use your fingers to gently but firmly massage the flea soap lather into your dogs coat, right down to the skin. Make sure that you do this over the dogs entire body! Keep massaging the flea shampoo into your dogs skin, for about 5 minutes.

You should start seeing the fleas trying to come to the surface of your dogs coat, their trying to find air because your smothering them.

Step 3: It's time to rinse your pet with the water. Go from the neck down your dog's body, to the tail. The fleas will try to get to your dogs face because it's the highest point of their body. Between smothering them with the lather and drowning them with the water, they're trying to survive.

After the flea shampoo is rinsed from your dogs coat, you're going to continue rinsing them with the water for about 10 more minutes. You are probably starting to see fleas coming out around your dogs face and neck. With your wet hand, stroke the fleas off your dogs face and neck, pushing them down toward the water. You're drowning the fleas.

Step 4: Take your dog out of the water and dry them thoroughly with a towel. You need them mostly dry for the next step of the flea removal. If you are going to blow dry your pet, you can do step 5, while your drying your dog with the dryer.

Step 5: You are going to use a flea comb to get any fleas and flea dirt, that's left on your dog, off. If your blow drying your dog, you will use the comb while drying your dog.

Starting at your dogs neck, right behind their ears, you're going to comb, using full strokes all the way to your dogs tail. After each combing, rinse the comb in a bowl of water. You don't want to put the fleas or flea dirt that your getting off your dogs coat back on again!

Step 6: Now that your dog is bathed, dried and combed, it's time to apply the monthly topical flea treatment. Follow the instructions on the flea medication box. The flea medication will need to be reapplied every month, so be sure to mark on your calender when you apply the first dose. This way you won't forget to reapply the flea medication on your dog.

Your dog is now flea free. To keep him/her this way you'll need to treat the inside of your home for fleas. There are 4 stages to the fleas life cycle and you need to get rid of all of them to protect your dog from re infestation. If your home is left untreated for fleas, even with the flea medication on your dog, the fleas will come back, possibly worse than before.
