How To Get Rid Of Fleas on Puppies

Learn how to get rid of fleas on puppies in 5 steps.

If you have seen fleas on your puppy, it is very important that you de-flea them immediately. Fleas can cause extreme health problems for your puppy. If the fleas are left untreated, your puppy will become anemic and lethargic. Signs of this are, loss of appetite, weight loss and loss of energy, just to name a few.

Before we start with the flea removal from your puppy, there are a few things you need to check on him/her.

Check to see if there are any hot spots or extremely red patches on your puppies skin. Fleas can cause this in puppies, usually this means your puppy is allergic to the flea bites. It could also just be a sign that your puppy has very sensitive skin.

If your puppy does have the red patches or hot spots, you'll need to remember that for the first step of the flea removal.

Follow the next 5 steps to get rid of the fleas on your puppy safely.

Step 1. You are going to need a flea shampoo that is safe for puppies. Most of them are safe for puppies but there are some that state for puppies over 8 weeks or 12 weeks. Make sure that you buy one that is for the appropriate age of your puppy.

If your puppies skin is showing the signs of hot spots or sensitive skin, you need to purchase an oatmeal based flea shampoo for puppies. The oatmeal base in this type of shampoo will still work extremely well killing fleas but without causing any more irritation to your puppies skin.

Next you need to fill a bathtub or sink with warm water. You want it to be deep enough to have your puppy fully submerged in the water, with only their head sticking out to breath.

Put your puppy in the water and put enough flea shampoo on him/her, to make a very thick lather on their coat. Rub the soap really well into their coat with your fingers, massaging it right to your puppies skin. This will feel really good on your puppy if they're itchy, plus it kills the fleas.

Rinse your puppy very well. You don't want to have any flea shampoo left on the skin, this could cause their skin to become even more irritated.

After your puppy is completely rinsed your going to keep them in the water. At this point you're probably seeing the fleas coming out around your puppies face. Just take your wet hand and push the fleas right back down into the water.

Keep your puppy in the water for approximately 15 minutes. The reason for this is, you're drowning the fleas. Since we can't use a harsher chemical treatment on our puppies, this is a very safe, effective way to get rid of the fleas on your puppy.

Step 2. Next, take your puppy out of the water and wrap them in a towel. You want them to be fully dried so they don't catch a chill. You could also blow dry them so their not soaking wet and shivering.

Step 3. After your puppy is fully dry you'll need to have a flea comb, to comb their fur and get any fleas and flea dirt that may still be on their skin.

Starting at the back of the ears, comb straight down to your puppies tail. Then rinse the comb off before doing it again. You'll want to continue doing this until your puppies entire coat has been thoroughly combed. Don't forget under your puppies neck and their feet.

Step 4. Your puppy is ready for the flea powder. Make sure it's labelled, safe for puppies. Follow the instructions on the container and apply this to your puppy. Don't get the flea powder in your puppies eyes, mouth or nose.

Step 5. The final step to get rid of the fleas on your puppy, will be putting a flea collar on him/her. Again check the labels and make sure that it's safe for your puppies age. Different flea collars have more or less of the flea killing chemicals in them, depending on the size and weight of your puppy.

You've taken the first steps in making your puppies environment flea free but the inside of your home will still need to be treated for fleas. If you only treat your puppy and not their home, you'll end up going through this over and over again.
