Many People have asked me how to make raw dog food.
The first question you need to ask yourself is Why?
Raw dog food is exactly what it sounds like. Feeding your dog food that has not been processed or cooked. This sounds kind of crazy! Why not just run down to the supermarket and grab one of about 100 different brands of dry dog food and give it to your dog! Everybody does it!!
I'll tell you why! The dog food industry has grown to immense proportions in this county by convincing us that we need to feed out dogs their processed, machined, overcooked dry kibble that has very little nutritional value to it. Dogs and Wolves (All dogs evolved from the Wolfe) in the wild live long and healthy lives for the most part. Cancer, Diabetes and degenerative diseases are almost unheard of in wild populations. This is why over the last 20 or so years more and more dog owners have begun feed their dogs raw food.
So enough about why, you want to know how to make raw dog food.
It's simple really, once you get the hang of it. It's a mater of identifying exactly what ingredients your dog needs and deciding where exactly to get them. Then prepare and store them on a regular basis. (Most likely you'll end up freezing at least a portion of the food.) Then feeding the dog in the proportions that make sense for him and you.
The largest proportion of the raw food diet will be raw meat and meaty bones. This can take the form of many different kinds of meat. Beef, Pork, Chicken, Turkey, Lamb, Even whole carcasses of Rabbits, Quail and Sushi grade fish. (Although be very careful with the fish it can stink the joint up something awful!)
Don't forget the bones! There a lot of great nutrients and minerals in the bones, This can include whole Chicken wings, backs, and necks. joints form beef etc.
The second largest proportion of the diet should be vegetables and fruit. Yes, I said fruit. WiId dogs and Wolves will consume quite a bit of fruit in their natural habitats. Vegies should be green and leafy mostly. Things like lettuce, parsley, celery, beets and turnips. Fruits should include what ever mix of Oranges, Apples, Bananas and or Pears your dog likes.
The smallest proportion of the diet should be Offal. This is basically organs. Hearts, livers kidneys etc.
the proportions of the above ingredients should be approximately as follows;
Meat and bones 60 - 75% Vegies and fruit 25 - 40% Offal 10 - 20%
The meat, bones and vegetables all can be found at your local grocery store. The Offal will probably have to be purchased at a good local butcher shop. There are many ways to chop, grind cut up and portion out these ingredients, It's really up to you how you do it and how often you buy it. Lots of people will buy quite a bit ahead and freeze as much as they can. Of course this requires freezer space. If you don't have a lot of freezer space simply plan to go to the store a little more often.
Well, that's really about it! now you know how to make raw dog food.
With a little focus and practice before to long you may be showing other dog owners how to make raw dog food.
This is really interesting! I have been cooking for my dog for the past two years since he cannot tolerate commercial dog food. I haven't served him raw meat because I'm concerned about e.coli and Salmonella due to the poor handling conditions with store bought meat. Have you had any issues with this in your dogs? Or do you have a way to buy meat that isn't at risk for these kinds of contamination?
