How to make your LED Dog Collar Waterproof

If you have recently bought your Dog an LED Collar you may have noticed that it is not very waterproof.

It may have stopped working altogether or maybe just changed its light mode after being used in the rain. It may have automatically switched from a steady light to one of the flashing modes or vice versa. Chances are you'll want to make your LED Dog Collar Waterproof to stop this happening again!

Most economy LED Dog Collars are not advertised as being Waterproof, basically because they aren't! Some very much more expensive models are completely waterproof and, as you would expect, this feature is prominent in the manufacturer's spec sheets or in the seller's adverts.

The cost difference, however, can be quite large. Possibly putting these higher quality collars either out of your reach, or making them too expensive and more than you would like to spend. If you have more than one dog the cost of buying an LED Dog Collar for each one, as sensible as this may be, could be very high indeed! Some of these waterproof collars can be well over $30 each, so if you have many dogs this could be prohibitive. This would mean than you and your dogs having to go without the brilliant protection that these LED Dog Safety Devices provide.

However, by buying a cheaper, lower quality LED Dog Collar you could not only save money but also keep all your dogs safe, sound and highly visible when walking at night or early in the morning. Some of these, very much cheaper collars, are just as effective in the dark - they just don't like getting wet!

Going out in heavy rain will almost certainly cause the collar to malfunction, leaving you and your dogs in the dark and possibly invisible to motorists. If your dog is off-leash and the light is poor, it could very difficult to keep track of him or her. It is often surprising just how hard it is to see some dogs in the gloom of a forest or undergrowth.

Some dogs seem to have come with built-in camouflage. My brindle colored Lurcher dog is a case in point. She is light in color and when I first got her I though she would easily stand out in poor light. Wrong! She blends into the bushes and fallen leaves and virtually disappears! An LED collar for this dog is essential for helping me to keep track of just where she is.

On a few occasions, when walking in the rain, her 'economy' LED Dog Collar simply stopped working altogether or generally became quite erratic in operation. Water had entered the battery compartment, flooding the electronics and causing it to misbehave! It normally recovered after being left somewhere warm overnight to dry out, but this meant it was out of action for a while.

A solution was required. Either put it away and Save It For A (non) Rainy Day - bursts into song - or buy a more expensive one! Making this LED Dog Collar waterproof would not only save money but would also make it more reliable if caught out in a sudden, unexpected downpour.

The solution I came up with was, and still is, very cheap, effective and reliable. It does involve a little regular work to re-apply it once in a while, but that is a small price to pay, in my opinion.

The solution I came up with was very simple, uses some common household materials and is very easy to do. All you will need is some transparent Food Wrap from the kitchen and some clear stick tape such as Sellotape.

Simply cut a piece of the Cling Film about 6 inches long - trial and error here will soon determine this measurement - lay the open dog collar flat on the film and roll the film around it a few times. Fold over the ends to match the length of the collar to keep things neat. I find that winding the film two or three times around the collar is more than enough.

Then carefully apply a few strips of tape around the collar, going in the same direction as the film, of course. Make sure to apply tape to the buckles halves at the ends of the collar to stop any water possibly entering from either end. An extra strip or two around the battery compartment will help too, as this where water can cause some bad problems.

The clear cling film, even when wound around the collar several times, doesn't seem to make the LED lights noticeably dimmer and you ll find it just as bright as before.

Job done!

Now, it may not look particularly pretty, but if you do it well, it will be waterproof enough to cope with the heaviest and most prolonged of rainfalls.

It probably won't survive being submerged under water, so if your dog has a preference for swimming or chasing ducks into rivers or ponds you may have to consider one of the more expensive, but fully waterproof, LED Dog Collars. But for most dogs, this solution is more than good enough and will allow you to spend more money on treats for your Best Friend.

A cheap and cheerful, money-saving solution that will make your LED Dog Collar Waterproof and keep it shining brightly in the foulest of weather.
