How To Pottytrain A Yorkie
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

The Yorkie is a small dog and like all small dogs they can be difficult to pottytrain.  To learn how to pottytrain a yorkie we should take a peek at their background.

The Yorkshire Terrier affectionately referred to as a yorkie has its roots in England’s Yorkshire, Leeds and Manchester counties.  When Scottish weavers relocated to northern England they of course brought their dogs with them.  Their dogs bred with the local dogs and in 1870 the breed became known as the Yorkshire Terrier.  Although the exact breeds are not known the dominant breed to form the Yorkie was the Scottish Terrier.  This man-made breed was used to kill vermin like rats and mice that the clothing mills and mine shafts were infested with.

The Yorkshire Terrier was first recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1885.  Over the years the Yorkie has gone from killing vermin to becoming a fashion dog.  Many a Yorkie can be seen being carried by women either under their arm or in a handbag.  Because of their tiny size they can just about go anywhere.

It is because of their small size that when learning how to pottytrain a yorkie we run into difficulties.  When you are learning how to pottytrain a Yorkie you need to keep in mind how tiny their bladders are especially when they are really young.  You need to be prepared for accidents because with a Yorkie they are going to happen.

Although you should go through the motion and learn how to pottytrain a yorkie, realistically your Yorkie won’t be fully pottytrained until they are a few months old or physically developed.  Often a Yorkie will have occasional accidents all through their life.

Because of their small bladders and the inability to hold it for very long like a large size dog many Yorkie owners will use potty pee pads as they learn how to pottytrain a yorkie.

As owners get more used to their yorkie and really start to learn how to pottytrain a yorkie some owners will even teach their yorkie to use a litter box. This may seem odd a first as you learn how to pottytrain a yorkie but your yorkie is very similar to a cat in size so why not. They also do not like cold weather so this way they will not have to go out to do their business. They do seem like a dog that enjoys being pampered so somehow this just seems to suit them.

You can use more traditional methods when learning how to pottytrain a Yorkie.  Just remember all the methods require patience, routine and positive reinforcements.  Good luck and have fun!
