BARF is an acronym that stands for Bones And Raw Food. The BARF raw dog food diet has been gaining popularity for about ten years now.

Some people who utilize the BARF raw dog food diet simply purchase the raw food frozen and prepared. This is easier and quicker but not necessarily better or more economical. People who prepare their own raw food will be supplying their dog with a much healthier diet and enjoying a more fulfilling relationship with their animal.

In order to buy and prepare the ingredients for the BARF raw dog food diet you will need to be somewhat organized and be prepared to focus on the task and be able to allot some time to getting it all done. The last thing you want to do is either buy the wrong things and not give your dog the right nutrients he needs, or buy to much of the right thing and have it go to waste. So before you go to the store, make sure you have mapped everything out before hand.

Make menus for the dog. keeping in mind the ratios I mentioned in the earlier post. about 60 to 75% of the food in the BARF raw dog food diet is comprised of Meat and bones. About 25% or so should be vegetables and a small amount of Offal or internal organs such as heart, liver, kidneys etc. should be added in around the edges.

There are several things to consider when deciding how much raw food to purchase. One thing to keep in mind of course is how much your dog eats. His size and energy level will dictate how much food he consumes. Another thing to take into consideration in the planning stages is your storage capacity. You need to decide how you are going to store the raw food. You don't necessarily need a large freezer, but it helps. If you don't have a lot of freezer space, it will simply mean more frequent trips to the store. Keep in mind that not all fresh food have the same shelf life. Raw meat will last from three to six months in the freezer.

Remember to add vegetables into your BARF raw dog food. You can, if you have the freezer space, freeze some of your vegetables in order to buy in bulk and save money. You don't need to be to picky about what fruits and vegetables to buy for your dog. They will be mashed up and added in so that he doesn't even realize it anyway. So when at the supermarket watch for the sales and or even for the stuff that they are throwing away that doesn't look really good but that is still perfectly eatable.

When you first start buy ingredients for Barf raw dog food, it can seem a little overwhelming, however once you get a system down it isn't that much different form buying food for the rest of your family.

Just remember to be organized and have weekly menus planned out and the Barf raw dog food diet will became just another part of your weekly family trip to the grocery store.
