How to Stop A Dog Licking You

A dog’s tongue has many uses besides tasting. It is also used for checking out new people and animals, expressing their feelings towards others, and to express submissiveness. Licking is quite a natural behavior for dogs, but some dog owners think it is overdone at times. Learning how to stop a dog licking you is not a difficult task – you just need to know the method that gets the best results.

The first thing to do is to ascertain why your dog licks you so much. What is the reasoning behind his actions? Since you, the dog owner, are more acquainted with your dog than anyone else, it should not be too difficult to find the cause of this problem.

The way to stop a dog licking you is pretty easy to figure out. You just need to know the reasons behind it. Three of the most common causes are:

Sheer affection – This will be easy to detect. Your dog will be relaxed and stress-free. Maybe he’ll lick you when you return home, or when he’s happy about something.

Puppy love – this is easy to stop and is the most common reason why your dog will lick you.

Anxiousness and stress – obsessive-compulsive behavior can occur if your dog is feeling stressed. If your dog is unhappy or anxious, an overabundance of licking can occur. Some dogs may even lick themselves if they feel nervous. You should be able to figure out how your dog is feeling by his tense body language. Make sure that he is getting enough exercise and mental stimulation. Arrange your day so you can give him as much attention as he needs. Fixing the cause will eliminate the problem of how to stop a dog licking you.

Once you have found the reason for your dog’s licking behavior, try to resolve the problem that is causing it. If stress is the reason, you may need to spend more time with him doing his favorite activities, taking him for more frequent, longer walks, or leaving him alone for shorter periods of time.

The main reason why dogs love to lick their owners is excitement – they love you and they want you to know it! If you think you have done all you can to make your dog happy and content, but he is still licking you excessively, you need to let him know that his actions are unacceptable.

By using your body language, you will let him know that you won’t tolerate it anymore. When he licks you, immediately move away. Look in the opposite direction. Then using a strong tone, say “No!” or whatever you feel comfortable with. He’ll likely follow you and start licking you again. At this point, repeat the same process, saying no more than your short reprimanding phrase.

Most dogs will be very persistent – letting you know that you are their most loved possession. You have to be more determined than he is and outlast him for this technique to be effective. Do not get angry with him in any way or react negatively. Just by tricking your dog into thinking you are withdrawing your affection will be enough to get your point across. Once he has learned that showing his affection by licking is not an option, he will resort to other more desirable ways to demonstrate his fondness for you.

Good training techniques and a little patience can correct your dog's bad behaviors. By finding out how to stop a dog licking you by using gentle, but effective guidance, you will help create a stronger bond with your pet. As a result, you will have a well-behaved, healthy, happy companion.
