How To Stop Dogs Chewing Your Stuff

Most dogs love to chew but some like it more than others. This can become quite a big problem for pet owners. If your dog seems more interested in chewing your stuff than chewing on his own toys or treats, this is destructive chewing and needs to be addressed.

The Reasons Dogs Chew

There are usually particular reasons why dogs chew anything in sight. Sometimes we need to observe if there is a situation that is causing it. If you can find out what the problem is, the faster you will be able to remedy it. Can one of these be the reason for your dog’s destructive chewing?

  • Chewing helps if your dog has anxiety. If he is left alone for long periods, he needs an outlet to pass the time. Chewing can calm him down.
  • Chewing can be rewarding if it is tasty, but it can also be fun to your dog.
  • If your dog doesn’t get much exercise to burn up his energy, chewing may be used as a substitute.

Stop Dogs Chewing

Here are a few tips you can use to help this behavioral problem:

  1. The first thing you need to do is to take away the temptation by removing all the chewable items available to him. If he has tasted some of your things already, he is more apt to be tempted by them.
  2. Do not replace new stuff with old stuff – your dog can’t tell the difference and this will encourage him to keep on chewing anything he can get his teeth around. He will be confused and think that everything is up for grabs.
  3. Having his own toys or treats will prevent him looking for other items to chew on and help eliminate this undesirable behavior. Try switching a few different ones around so that he doesn’t get bored with the same one all the time.
  4. By being consistent when you are training him, he will learn faster. Spent time with him and let him know what he can chew on and what he can’t.
  5. If you catch your dog in the act of chewing your stuff, clap your hands. When he stops, give him his own chewable toy. Praise him when he bites it and let him know this is a better choice. He needs to know chewing your stuff is not an option.

Dogs can be a great companion, but certain behavioral issues can interfere with the relationship you have with your pet. By finding out the best possible way to train him so that he will respond to your commands, you will help strengthen the bond between you.

Certain teaching techniques are better than others, but there are proven strategies that actually work. You can train your dog in a gentle, loving way. You just need to know how by gathering all the information you can and following professional advice.

Street Talk

My now older dog once destroyed a six feet couch. I left her out of her crate on a trial run while I ran to the post office. Came home 45 minutes later and was in stuffing up to my knees. She trashed the whole thing. It was amazing.

What a surprise you must have had! She must have had a great time. They certainly can be quite destructive when left alone.

Thanks for your comment. It takes time and patience but it is well worth training your dog not to get hold of your peronsal belongings.
