How to Train a Dog to Shake Hands

Tricks are a way that you can keep your dog's brain working and keep it out of trouble. When training dog tricks the most important thing to keep in mind is that this is fun. It can be a bit frustrating at times when the dog doesn't understand what you are working for. If you expect training for tricks to be fun overall it will be a much more rewarding experience for both you and your dog.

When learning how to train a dog to shake first you need to decide which shake you are after. If you are training dog tricks, you will probably be looking for the dog to lift a paw. If you are working with a hunting dog that is frequently in the water, the shake command will probably be shake to get dry. Each behavior is relatively easy to get but don't confuse the dog and try to get multiple behaviors with the same command. When training shake to get dry and you want to shake a dog's paw, use another command such as "give me your paw". Common sense but an important distinction.

There are three phases for how to train a dog for most behaviors. Show the behavior, Lure the behavior, and expect the behavior. When training the Shake first you show the dog the behavior. Tell it to shake, pick up a paw and treat the dog while holding the paw. Repeat this until the dog starts to lift the paw when you give the command. Reach down and gently grasp the paw for as long as this takes. If the dog starts to indicate that it is getting the idea, you can touch the dogs shoulder to reinforce the desire.

Eventually, when training this trick presenting your hand to the dog and saying shake should get the dog to offer a paw. If you train both paws back and forth offer the other hand for the alternate paw. You can also use an alternate command like give me your other paw for the alternate. Getting both paws for the shake command can be a bridge to the dance command if you get the first behavior working you can give the alternate commands quickly and get the dog shifting from foot to foot like dancing.

Learning how to train a dog to do tricks should be a fun time. Keep the training light and exciting and training dog tricks can be rewarding for both you and your dog. It will keep the dog's brain working and keep it out of trouble by giving it something to do. Spending time with your dog in this training will increase your bond and create a wonderful relationship with your pet.

I keep on watching Chris Milan's dog training in National Geographic and it is amazing. Your thoughts here also share almost the same methods. I think I have to get a new dog and apply those training.
