How to Train a Dog to Sit

One important task that your dog should be able to do is to sit on command. How to train a dog to sit is a fundamental behavior. Most other behaviors will chain off of the sit command. Need to get your dog to stay, well put them in a sit first. Working on the recall or come command. The dog needs to sit and wait until called. Is it feeding time? The dog should sit and wait politely for its dinner. There are many other occasions where a reliable sit will facilitate another behavior.

To learn how to train a dog to sit, we start by molding the behavior, when the pup understands this step, we move on to luring the behavior and finally we expect the behavior. This is a standard that we follow for each behavior that we teach at Companion Dog Obedience.

To mold the pup into a sit, start with the pup on your left side. You should be kneeling on the floor. Bring it in nice and close and take the leash and put it under your knees. The leash should be loose and is used only to prevent the pup from taking off on you. Place your Right hand on the pups chest with the collar hooked by your Thumb. Take your Left hand and run it down the pups back, scoop the back legs under and have the dog sit on your hand. When the pups butt hits the floor(your hand) say sit in a firm voice. Hold this position until the pup stops struggling and relaxes. Release the pup with a happy OKay and make a big deal of the pup. Repeat this for a week, by the end of the week, the pup should sit as you start to run your hand down its back. Do not push on the dogs butt. This will elicit a negative response and the pup will push back.

The next step is to lure the pup into the sit position, it should now understand the sit command so this should be easy. Get some treats ( I use cut up microwaved hot dogs, string cheese is good too). While still kneeling next to the pup, grasp the back of its collar with your Left hand and lift gently, with your Right ( holding the treat)bring the treat up to the dogs nose and raise it over its head. As it reaches for the treat the butt should go down. This is the start of collar training. Lifting on the collar means sit, pushing down means to lay down ( more on the down command in another article)

The final step in how to train a dog to sit is expecting the behavior. If you have followed the previous steps ( 1 week each) the pup should have a good understanding of what it means to sit. You can now stand next to the pup and tell it to sit. Lift gently on the collar and the pup should sit. A treat held by its nose can reinforce the command. Lift it and move it back over the pups head and the butt should drop.

This is just the first phase of how to train your dog. The sit command is the basic building block. Progress through the commands of sit, down, stand and come and you will have a dog that is ready to get its Canine Good Citizen certificate. You will see an amazing difference when this simple behavior is complete.

Street Talk

I think its allot quicker to teach a dog to sit by hand gestures, touching the dog seems to prolong the training and is distracting to the pup. If you hold a treat in front of the pup, and bring it up saying sit so the dog automatically backs up and puts its butt on the floor, as soon as he sits you can reward him. Ive seen four month old border collies learn this in a day.

Part of what we teach is that touching the collar is a command. By doing it this way you can cross over to a gentle lift on the leash that causes the dog to sit.

By playing music to my puppy and dancing my self in the mornings the dog grew up to dance when it hears music and sees people dancing, she jumps on to her back legs and balances with the front paws in the air.. Its very sweet and funny prooving that dogs can learn to love music too. But thank you for this advice as i still dont know how to make her sit using simpley words and without a tap on the back.
