Hypoallergenic Dogs: Own One AND Be Allergy Free

Hypoallergenic dogs have one or more of the following traits:

  • Little or controlled dander
  • Does not drool
  • Barely sheds or not at all

These traits come from the fact that dog proteins are what usually cause allergies in humans to flare up. Dog proteins are found in skin dander and saliva and shedding helps spread around both of those. So what are your options if you have very sensitive dog allergies, but love them as pets? Some additional work around the home, dog training and dog selection can all help. Let’s dive deeper.

Whether you developed a dog allergy after having a dog for a while (can happen with age and environment changes) or just love a type of dog that doesn’t have any of the traits of hypoallergenic dogs, there is still hope to keep that dog around and not be miserable. Changing furnace filters regularly and using a higher grade filter will help. Stay on top of cleaning, especially dusting everywhere. Frequent vacuuming will help control the dander and any shedding hair caring dander. Also, giving your dog baths 1 to 2 times per week is a good practice too. Just keep an eye on your dog’s coat and skin. It can dry out with so many baths. Trying using an oatmeal or tea tree based shampoo to help prevent dry skin, which then leads to more dander.

Dog training leads to more hypoallergenic dogs because excessive barking can lead to projectile saliva and dander. If you intend to use your dog as a watch dog, preventing him/her from barking may backfire if they won’t bark for danger. Otherwise, it is good practice to limit your dog’s barking so he/she doesn’t scare anyone they shouldn’t or release more allergens either.

The breed or hybrid breed of dog can make a significant difference to your allergies. Hypoallergenic dogs are usually on the smaller side so that they have less surface area to produce dander. Most smaller dogs don’t drool very much either. Some do like to lick, so watch out for that. All breeds of poodles and schnauzers are considered hypoallergenic dogs because they don’t shed or drool. Therefore, schnauzers, poodles and schnoodles (hybrid breed) are very good dogs to own if you have allergies. They come in all colors and sizes.

One catch to all this planning to own hypoallergenic dogs is that every person is different and every dog is different. If you suffer from moderate to heavy dog allergies, it is a good idea to hold and cuddle with the dog before you bring it home. Make note of you reaction to the dog. No one knows you better than you.
