Is It Healthy To Feed Your Dog Raw Foods?

A raw food diet for dogs normally consists of raw meats, bones, vegetables, and fruits. The idea is that the food is closer to what they would have eaten in the wild, thus making this a more natural diet and healthier for dogs.

Raw feeding dogs was first suggested by a veterinarian named Ian Billinghurst. He originally published his thoughts on raw food diet for dogs in 1993 (which is well worth reading) with the idea that adult dogs would feel better and live longer eating the foods that they ate before they were domesticated and the foods that all of the Australian sled dogs still ate. Billinghurst even went as far as saying that the wheat filled commercial dog food was harmful to the health of adult dogs.

Although Billinghurst made many great points the FDA and many other veterinarians disagreed. They felt there were just too many risks when using a natural diet for dogs. This has made the subject very controversial, but many believe Billinghurst and the idea the raw food diet for dogs is healthier and closer to nature including myself.

There are a great many benefits to raw feeding dogs. The benefits include shiner coats, healthier skin, higher levels of energy, cleaner teeth, and smaller stools. The higher amount of energy is why most Alaskan sled dogs are fed the natural diet of raw foods.

There are a lot more options for people that would like to feed their dogs a raw diet since the raw food diet for dogs came out and was embraced by many. There are now commercially processed raw foods. Some are frozen, while others are freeze-dried.

For some a strict natural diet for dogs is not feasible. For these people a combination diet might be best. This is a mixture of processed dog foods and raw foods. This might work best for those that are on a budget and cannot afford a purely raw foods diet for their canine friends, but with the right research and information you will find it possible to make a switch to a raw food diet for your pet.

Although the raw food diets for dogs seem best there are some risks to feeding your dog raw foods. There is some risks from the bacteria found in raw meat. This bacterium can potentially harm both dog and human. Another potential risk is providing your dog an unbalanced diet. It is for this reason that you will need to pay close attention to what and how much you are feeding your dog to ensure their health and well-being.
