Labrador Retiever Training - Puppy Biting

If you have recently brought home a new Labrador Retriever, you are probably enjoying a new experience with your pup. They are a bundle of joy, a wonderful addition to your family, and there is a good possibility that you have experienced your new puppies teeth. Puppy biting can be a big problem with Labrador Retrievers. Labrador Retrievers are already a mouthy breed and they are smart so can be trained not to bite.

The first thing you need to know is that biting is not allowed, at any time, in any form. If the puppy puts its teeth on you, you need to correct this! Right now, every time. There are several ways that you can do this. The most effective with a small pup is to Yelp. When a puppy is in with its litter-mates they test their limits with the other pups. If a pup gets too aggressive and hurts another pup, they Yelp. If the infraction is repeated the other pups will leave the aggressor alone and go play somewhere else. Lab puppies are very social and this ostracism is quite effective at correcting misbehavior.

As the owner of a pup that pushes the limits, you need to mirror the behavior of the other puppies. When your pup bites, you Yelp. If the pup bites again, turn your back and leave the pup alone for a time. 5 minutes should be sufficient the first time. Then return to your pup and begin to play again. If it repeats the biting, Yelp again and leave the pup for a bit longer time. The pup may follow you and try to lick you. This is an apology accept it and start playing again. This is what you are looking for. Nice play without any mouthing.

If you have a bit older Lab pup and have been letting it get away with biting for a time thinking that perhaps the pup will grow out of it, you have a bigger problem. In this case, you need to make it uncomfortable for the pup to bite. The two best ways to do this are to place your finger on the back of their tongue to elicit a gag reflex, or if you don't want to put your hand in their mouth, you can roll their top lips under their teeth so that when they bite down they bite themselves. This does take a bit of timing but can be done effectively rather easily.

With either of these techniques maintaining the corrections for a week should give the pup an understanding that a puppy biting you is not allowed. If you correct the puppy biting each and every time it occurs, and the behavior has the same consequences each time, the biting will stop and you will be much happier with your new Labrador Retriever.
