Labrador Retriever Training- Potty Training a puppy

Once your new puppy is settled into your home, all of the oohing and aahing is over, reality sets in. This little bundle of love has physical needs that must be attended to. Yup, you guessed it, you have the need for potty training a puppy. If you have read up on the basic literature that you can buy at any pet store you are faced with a myriad of possibilities. Do you confine your little charge to the kitchen and put down some newspapers and hope that this will solve your problem? Do you follow him or her around the house waiting for the inevitable squat or is there a better way to get this done without causing you undo hardship. The bottom line is that with the pup comes responsibility and time to work with it to get it to understand what is acceptable behavior and what isn't. Potty training a puppy is the first of many lessons that your little bundle will learn.

A few basics that you should understand about puppies are that they are den animals. In their ancestry dogs lived in holes in the ground surrounded by the scent of their pack and nurtured by their mothers. Before they are weaned their mother takes care of all of their elimination needs by cleaning them up. Licking their backsides also stimulates the need to pee and poop.

Once weaned they venture outside the den to defecate and urinate. At this stage they will naturally want to keep their den clean. This works out for their new home if the pup is given a place to feel like it is home in its den. A crate or kennel fills this need wonderfully and, if healthy, a pup will not pee or poop in its crate. This does make one assumption that the kennel is not so large the pup gets the attitude, room for pee and for me. Get a kennel that is the size of your dog or has a movable divider so that there is only enough room for the pup and can be expanded as the pup grows.

Once comfortable in the crate your pup will not soil his sleeping area. Now potty training a puppy really begins when you set up a schedule. Dogs are very habitual and will fall into a regimented schedule very nicely. In fact, they prefer it. Your pup will need to go when it wakes up and about 30 minutes after eating or drinking. Add these to your schedule. Take the puppy outside to a specific spot when it wakes up. When it goes praise it lavishly.

Take it in and play with it for a bit then after a set time or when it seems to get tired, pop it back into the crate to have a nap. The pup should be supervised at all times at this point. When it wakes up, outside again to the same area. Eventually, this will become the place where all duty is done. If you like, when the pup starts to go, you can give a command like "be quick" or " do your potty". After a time the pup will link the two and you will have a puppy that goes on command.

Problems that might happen when potty training a puppy are usually related to waiting too long between potty breaks, not being attentive to the pups needs or leaving the pup uncontrolled and unsupervised. Labrador Retriever training doesn't have to be difficult but it does take consistency. Take the time you need with your pup and you will be successful.
