Make the Holidays Merry for Your Pets

Christmas is just around the corner and like any other holidays, it can be very exciting and at the same time stressful. Think Christmas parties, shopping for gifts for everyone in your list, relatives coming over to celebrate with you. All these are enough to give you a holiday hangover (sometimes even when it isn't over yet)! But what most pet owners doesn't realize is that this could also be a cause for stress and anxiety for their pets. Pets especially cats are used to having a routine. If you cat or dog is used to having a quiet evening at home with just you and him watching tv in the living room, then having twenty loud partying people over is going to confuse or even scare him.

Here are some tips to help your pets cope with the holiday stress:

1. Make plans for your pet. If you are planning to host a party over at your house, make sure that you have prepared a place that would be comfortable for your pet. Is Fido a social dog or does he prefer to have quiet time? If you think plenty of people in his territory would scare him or get him agitated, then make sure he gets one room all for himself. Put all his favorite toys, litter box, water and probably a few nibbles in case he gets hungry. Make sure to check on him every now and then and assure him that all is ok. If you think he will enjoy joining in the party then that would be great. Make sure to check on him to be sure that he is not getting stressed (or bored?) and politely tell any of your guest who may be annoying your pet to stop it! Depending on whether your pet is used to or not with kids, you should look out when small children approaches him to make sure he is comfortable with it.

2. When traveling during the holidays, it is best to go by car. Have you ever tried flying during the holiday season? Doesn't it stress you out? Well try flying as a luggage and during the holiday season! Sad to say most airlines treat pets as part of your luggage and unless they will allow you to have your pet sit with you ( some airlines do, if your pet is small) then you are putting your dear pet into holiday agony! Travel by car if you can, but if you really have to fly make sure that your pet is as comfortable as he can get. Check with the airlines about the required types of carriers that you need.

3. Your veterinarian knows best. Lastly, it would be a good idea to visit your pets veterinarian before all the holiday hullabaloo. Tell him what your plans are and ask what actions need to be taken to ensure your pets comfort and safety. For example, he might prescribe a mild sedative for your pet before travel or give you helpful hints on how both of you could make it a merry holiday. He also can do a routine check up to make sure that your pet is in perfect shape to enjoy the holidays with you.

The holiday season can be fun and exciting for both pets and owners. All you need is some planning. Happy holidays to you and your pets!
