Mitt Romney Family Dog Top Car

I guess some years back Mitt Romney planned a family trip to Canada, a 12-hour ride Since there was no room in the car, he put his dog in a dog kennel, provided it with a windshield, and strapped the kennel to the the top of the car. Why he didn't board his dog in a kennel, I don't know. Our Labrador, Zipper, loved to go to the kennel. That was his vacation.

David Letterman, Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien have great fun with this story bringing it up whenever they can. Letterman shows Romney chatting with his family in the station wagon and the dog hanging his head down against the glass of the driver’s side window. Romney said the dog enjoyed his ride. Well, maybe he did.

The story is getting old but still (well maybe not) funny.

David Letterman has a ranch north of me in Montana. He sees dogs riding in the back of pickups whenever he goes up there. Here in Buhl. Idaho, there is a pickup in every driveway, some times two, three or four. And when someone jumps in a pickup and takes off, he knows where his dog is. It’s in the back of the pickup.

Sometimes, dogs are put in kennels in the back of the pickup and sometimes they are constrained. Most often, they go flying in the wind if the truck is involved in an accident.

Other animals can be injured too in automobile accidents. Yesterday, two heavy pickups, one pulling a horse trailer, the other a tanker, collided about 50 miles north of here. They both went off the road and burst into flames like in a Hollywood thriller. There were horses in one trailer. A young man and an older woman and two horses were killed.

Can you see that in your mind's eye?

Horrible!

My Number 3 Son is a veterinarian. I hang around his clinic a bit and I have watched him work in three states. He is always treating animals that have been injured in some dramatic way on the farm or on the highway and sometimes he treats a dog that went “flying” from a pickup truck. I've watched him pull porcupine quills twice this year, a pitiful thing to see.

When I watch him place metal where bone used to be, I feel sorry for these innocent creatures that were hurt in an automobile or farm accident. Animals suffer just like we do (because we are animals too.) Dog recover faster than we do but it still take time.

Sometimes animals are mistreated. In Minnesota we got a call while driving around from farm to farm. A horse was bleeding. We got to the farm and my son had barely enough medication to knock a humongous work plug to the ground. He gave the horse the shot and down he went, blood spurting from his hoofs where a farm implement had injured them a few days before.

Somehow he dug into the hoof and tied of the blood vessel. The horse stood up about two seconds later. My son had told the young Amish farmer not to work the horse after the first episode. He told him again.

I’m concerned for our Idaho critters. Yesterday’s accident was terrifying with men and horses killed. Sometimes we lose animals here to d-CON®. Everyone should read the warnings at the official site and on the products.

We lost our dog, Oliver Wendell Holmes to this rodent poison. Oliver suffered terribly and three different vets could not save him. It broke my wife’s heart. Now she has Alzheimer's Disease so she has him back with her along with our five children when they were young (some of whom are now grandparents). She wonders, maybe, why I can't see them.

In our case, the rodent poison was placed way under a work bench with a shelf that Oliver could not get under, but he could get his paw under and reach around. Maybe rodents moved the bait. I’m not sure, but it was out from under the work bench on the garage floor. One farmer here had it in the front of a horse trailer and killed his horse.

There are dangers to pets such as parrots and other birds that are free to fly around the house. Just before we went to the bleeding horse, we went to a farm where a parakeet was sick. My son asked if he had the run of the house, especially on the refrigerator. The bird was eating plant fertilizer. What was good for the house plants was not good for the bird.

So, be careful with your pets. Treat them like your children when it comes to safety.

Like I say, I’m concerned for our Idaho critters. I hope you are concerned about critter safety in your area.

Street Talk

I love animals so much I read only half of this article as don't want to get all sad. I take my 2 pound poodle everywhere with me in her little bag including church and restaurants/stores. Just yesterday there was a news item of a poor shepherd (abandoned) on a mountain somewhere and he was days without water but they rescued him and he will live, but I'd like to dangle the owners off the cliff for couple of days so they can feel the abandonment, but of course rescue them also. Talk later, John

Hi John, this is a very interesing article. We recently lost our 6 year old Hungarian Vizla very quickly through liver cancer. We wrote to the breeder in Australia (we used to live there), kind of out of courtesy and she replied that there is growing evidence world wide of the effect of pesticide poisoning for dogs (and presumably other animals) as they absorb it through their paws and this then gets to their organs. In most cases there is nothing to tell us humans that such pesticides have been used in a field where a dog may go to chase a ball etc, so this is a very worrying trend. Regards Keith

I just read a wonderful & caring article from a "kind soul". Like you, I cannot stand to see any animal suffer. Certainly not in real life and not even on tv. It is incumbent upon Us to keep them safe. We have brought these wonderful creatures into our realm so, we are responsible for their welfare, Period! "All Creatures Great & Small"....we all know the ending.

You are right, Tex! Yesterday I went out to help clean a widow's yard whom I'm responsible for. On the way home slowed down and braked for a squirrel. He left the rode and then darted back under my car. Some times when you are out trying to do good, you do harm to animals, it's like running into a flock of migrating blackbirds when you are out do church work..I hate that. I never step on an ant if I can avoid it and I hate to kill spiders. But when we were first married, Pat got bit by a black widow and I don't ever want her to go through that again. Tnx Meredith!
