More About the Insane Dog And Other Things That Are Insane Around Here

The other day there was a scratch at my front door. I opened the door without checking and realized that I had made a big mistake for several reasons. First, the dog goes out the back door, not the front, so it would not be her at the door. I don't know who or what I thought might be out there but I boldly just throw open the door and in comes a smiling, tail wagging Golden Retriever. This is not my dog. This is not his house but here he is and there he lay, all happy as could be on my couch. My own dog was apparently not concerned by the opening of the door but meanders out all casual like. She stares at the dog on the couch. She looks at me. She looks back at the dog on the couch. She play bows and that was all the invitation that the big fluffy dog needed.

Eventually I spot a guy walking an empty leash rather forlornly down the street. I ask if he is missing a dog, because frankly, you never know. He says that he is and we discuss the exciting prospect of getting his dog out without my dog following. We Larry, Moe and Curly this procedure until finally the Golden is outside and my Rottie mix is still inside. Defusing a bomb would have been less harrowing to be honest.

When she was a puppy, before she grew into the size of a small horse and started eating with all the discernment of a billy goat, she would chase falling leaves while out on walks, a charming, adorable habit that made us smile. Flash forward to the eighty pound behemoth that is often at the other end of the leash, often with me telling her to "focus" in vain hopes that that will keep her from jerking my arm off of my body because something has wandered past her field of vision. Her black lab part kicked in once and suddenly we were off and running, chasing a little gathering of birds. Finally I let go of the leash and just let her at them. The birds could fly, after all and I had zero desire to chase them at that moment. She came back, a sheepish grin on her silly girl face and we resumed our walk with just a hint of normality.

She is crazy and I will be the first to admit that. She is also sweet, loyal and amazingly smart. Now if I could only convince her that the dark is not her enemy, we would be golden.

Thanks. This dog is a major dingbat but I would never trade her for a million bucks. Now, someone comes in at a mil, five and I might have to rethink things.

Ah, the hardheaded Rotties. At least she is coming back to you. With any luck she won't have a small critter stuck in her teeth. :)

She has brought in toads from outside and laid them on my leg. She brought in a rat and then panicked. She barked and backed up every time this thing squeaked. She is absolutely terrified of smaller dogs and LOVES the kitties next door to pieces. She pushes them with her nose but has never harmed them. They come in to her dog kennel and wander about sometimes which cracks me up!
