Newfoundland Dogs

Are you looking for a giant addition to your family? How about a Newfoundland dog. They are A wonderful breed with A huge heart. Newfie's are perfect for families and thrive on their love and attention. There are countless accounts of Newfoundland dogs and there unbelievable bravery and intelligence. A breed with unbelievable attributes that always rank high in those top 10 lists for best dogs.

I have never had a dog that is more in tune on how I am felling then my current Newfie "Jeff." He really is my best friend but you should know he can be a real jerk sometimes too.

I think its important to share with you the good and the bad.

Lets start with the good stuff.

Newfoundland dogs are....

  1. Loyal, Newfoundlands will do anything for there masters.
  2. Patient, Newfies are unbelievably patient. Jeff waits for about an hour for my kids to get home everyday. He is also very patient with our other dog that can be a bit pushy.
  3. Protective, If your newf senses any sort of threat to you or your children he or she will take action. Especially if the children are in trouble. Newfoundlands are known for rescuing swimmers that didn't need saving. Their very sensitive to spastic movements, especially if your in the water.
  4. Tolerant, My son was 2 when Jeff moved in and immediately fell in love with him. My son M.J. would pull Jeffs hair, climb on him, tug his ears and Jeff never `growled or raised his jowls at him, not once. Jeff is incredibly tolerant.
  5. Gentle, Newfoundlands are very gentle. They have a very soft bite when taking food out of your hands. They would rather hurt themselves than their owner or anyone else.

  1. Hairy, Newfoundland dogs are very hairy and they shed a ton. Hair will get everywhere your bed, clothes, and yes in your food.
  2. Drool, If you ask me this is the worst part of owning a Newfie. They can actually launch drool onto the ceiling. The best is when the wipe their face on your companies lap,GROSS.
  3. Clumsy, Newfies are big and when they are still growing they are tremendously clumsy. As I am sure most puppies are but when your puppy is 80 lbs. it can do a lot of damage. Jeff has knocked the Christmas tree over 3 times, 8' tall x mass tree.
  4. Expensive, Newfies are expensive to buy, feed, and take care of. If your Newf has to go to the vet expect bills to be almost double that of a normal size k-9.
  5. Lazy, This breed can be incredibly lazy if it is neglected. If they become lazy and are not exercised regularly they can develop all sorts of illness and disease. If you you plan on buying A Newfoundland keep this in mind you must exercise this dog at least 3 times a week.
It's not an easy decision

Newfoundlands are an absolutely great breed of dog, there is no doubt. But whether or not you are cut out to own one is another story. Take this decision extremely seriously, do some research before you buy. There are hundreds of Newfoundlands given up for adoption every year, by people who think they can handle them.
