Non - shedding Dogs

I love dogs and hate cleaning so if you are like me then perhaps a non-shedding dog is for you.

Be aware though that all dogs lose fur the same that all people lose hair. Even non-shedding dogs lose a small amount it just means less cleaning!

To learn which dog would be ideal for you it is of course necessary to read up on each breed individually taking into account their energy level (how much exercise you will need to give them versus how energetic you are), how big they will get, their temperament and any health problems that may occur with the breed.

Also please bear in mind that just because they do not shed their fur they will still need grooming. How much grooming again depends upon the breed and how long or short their coat is.

But before you do your research, or go visiting cute puppies, below is a quick list of the most popular non shedding dogs and their grooming requirements to get you started.

· Affenpinscher – frequent grooming to reduce amount of lost hair

· Airedale Terrier – with regular hand stripping and grooming sheds very little

· American Hairless Terrier – hairless (cute in a bald sort of way)

· Bedlington Terrier – daily brushing & grooming every 4-6 weeks

· Bichon Frise - daily brushing & grooming every 4-6 weeks

· Bichon/Yorkie – cross between Bichon and Yorkshire terrier

· Border Terrier – weekly brushing and hand stripping twice a year

· Bouvier des Flanders – weekly brushing and grooming every 4-5 weeks

· Cairn Terrier – hand stripping

· Chinese Crested (hairless with a crest of fur) – skin needs moisturising

· Cockapoo – cross between Cocker Spaniel and Poodle

· Giant Schnauzer – if hair is allowed to grow long it will shed so keep trimmed

· Irish Terrier – hand stripping twice a year

· Labradoodle – cross between Poodle & Labrador

· Lakeland Terrier – regular stripping and trimming

· Lhasa Apso – only the undercoat is shed so regular grooming will keep it at bay

· Maltese – no undercoat, topcoat can be kept trimmed short

· Miniature Poodle – groom every 6-8 weeks

· Miniature Schnauzer – strip or clip to keep hair short

· Norfolk Terrier – comb once a week and strip twice a year

· Norwich Terrier – comb once a week and strip twice a year

· Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen - comb once a week and strip twice a year

· Portuguese Water Dog – regular brushing and clipping

· Puli – leave coat to look natural (like dreadlocks)

· Scottish Terrier – weekly brushing

· Shih-Tzu – daily brushing and regular grooming

· Spanish Water Dog – should never be brushed but any mats teased apart

· Standard Poodle – as Miniature Poodle

· Standard Schnauzer – as Miniature Schnauzer

· Toy Poodle – as Miniature Poodle

· Welsh Terrier – rake the coat regularly

· West Highland White Terrier – clipping as necessary

· Wirehaired Fox Terrier – clip or strip 3-4 times a year

· Yorkshire Terrier – long coat is high maintenance but can be puppy clipped

Crossbreeds are dependent upon the genetics of the individual puppy and how much of the non-shedding genes are passed on.

As you can see even non shedding dogs require regular care and grooming but this should be part of your life with your dog and something you both enjoy.

But if even this seems too much, then perhaps a short coated dog would be better and just forget the cleaning!
