Parvo Vaccine Before Grooming

It may not occur to some pet parents to get their dogs vaccinated before making a trip to the local groomers, but skipping this important step could mean dire consequences for your furry friend.

Different states and cities have different laws. So depending on the state, or demographic regulations, the only mandatory vaccination requirement to get your pooch in the door of a salon may only be the rabies vaccination. While this is fine and dandy because it is mainly for the protection of groomers, what about a more common, deadly, easily spread disease like Parvovirus? While Parvo cannot affect humans, it has a 91% mortality rate if left untreated, and in most cases requires immediate veterinary hospitalization

Parvovirus is an extremely contagious disease affecting canines. It can be spread directly or indirectly through contaminated fecal matter. there are two main types of Parvo, intestinal, and cardiac. intestinal Parvo is the most common form. After the dog manages to ingest this virus, it attacks rapidly dividing cells and depletes the white blood cell count. after this occurs, the anaerobic bacteria found in the intestines will cross over into the blood stream and cause the animal to become septic. Sepsis is another term for blood poisoning through means of infection. The time from exposure, to the time of exhibiting symptoms ranges from three to ten days. lethargy, vomiting and bloody diarrhea, and dehydration are the most common symptoms of this disease.

The cardiac form of Parvo affects puppies that contracted the disease in the uterus through their mother. This form causes respiratory failure, and cardiac arrest. The virus attacks the heart muscle and the puppies usually either die suddenly, or after a brief period of breathing difficulties. This type of Parvo is rarely seen due to vaccination efforts.

The vet can make the diagnosis of Parvo, by an ELISA test, or by microscopic examination. Treatment includes IV administration of fluids, antibiotics, anti-nausea injections, and B vitamins. Survival rate and prognosis pretty much relies on how quickly a diagnosis is made.

Because Parvo is such dangerous, and easily transmitted puppy disease. I would highly recommend this vaccination before taking your dog to any pet stylist, along with several other vaccinations like distemper and Bordatella. A 91% mortality rate for an untreated dog is just too high of a risk for me, and many other pet owners to take. If you find the idea of vaccinating your pet to be controversial, you can also learn tips and techniques on how to groom your dog yourself.
